AN unpaid bank bond on the Garden Village estate is forcing a delay on finishing the estate, begun more than twelve years ago.

Laois County Council are waiting on the money to finish off the estate on the Mountmellick road in Portlaoise, and take it in charge, after the developer left it unfinished.

Last week Cllr Jerry Lodge pleaded with the bank who provided the bond for their “good will” to pay out the money.

“They took a bet and lost. People who bought houses or are renting there are getting frustrated,” said Cllr Lodge.

“Laois County Council don’t exploit anyone, they only want the exact amount of money to bring the estate up to the condition it should be in. To drag it out is grossly unfair to the council and the people who bought the houses,” he said.

The architecturally designed housing estate is completely finished at the front, but the area to the rear has been left incomplete.

“The green space hasn’t been landscaped properly, there are fire hydrants left unfinished, lights are not installed, A sum of money was set aside but the pump station went haywire and created a serious situation,” said Cllr Alan Hand who seconded Cllr Lodge’s motion.

Council planners say they are working on a resolution with the bank concerned.

“The council is exploring every option with the relevant financial institution and is still hopeful that a successful outcome can be achieved,” was their reply to Cllr Lodge’s motion.
