IT is understood that talks are to be held between the VEC and the Laois branch of the Teachers Union of Ireland, following their dispute over teacher transfer agreements.

Charlie Flanagan TD welcomed the meeting taking place. “I hope that the parites will sit down around the table and resolve their differences in the best interests of the students. I have formally written to the general secretary of the IVEA, Michael Moriarty, requesting his assistance in dealing with this matter. I am concerned with the delay in bringing this matter to a resolution.

The Laois branch of the TUI recently held a protest outside the offices of Laois VEC on the Ridge Road in Portlaoise. Laois TUI then voted in favour of industrial action following unsuccessful attempts to have the transfer of two teachers reversed.

Brian Stanley TD said that he had raised the matter in the Dáil. “I raised this dispute with the Taoiseach in the Dáil and also discussed it separately with Minister Ruairi Quinn. I expressed my concern that it could escalate and it has the potential to become a serious problem”.

“I impressed on the Minister the importance of this agreement and the recent Labour Court ruling upholding it.”
