Vote yes - Minister for Children

MINSITER for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald was in Laois today, and appealed to everyone to get out and vote yes in next weekend’s referendum. Speaking to the Leinster Express today during a visit to the Treo Nua centre in Portlaoise, the Minister urged people not to assume that others will vote, but to get out and vote yes.

“This is a hugely important referendum. It is the most important building block for protecting children in 20 years. All the credible agencies are supporting it. Get out and get informed and do not be misled by scaremongering”.

Government cuts relating to children with special needs is not a reason to vote no, she added, stating that it would be “perverse” to vote no in this referendum because of cuts.

The Minister was travelling around Laois today and also visited the newly opened Youth Cafe, which she said was very impressive. She also announced that there will be funding for youth cafes to the tune of €1.5 million, as well as play and recreation initiatives.
