Wetland neighbours on septic tanks
While Clonaslee’s new eco friendly sewage plant is receiving the highest of praise, homeowners nearby will have to rely on their own traditional septic tank systems.
Among those living within a stone’s throw of the wetlands is farmer James Foynes who sold the site to Laois County Council. He is one of several houses past the entrance to the wetlands, on the Tullamore road, who were obliged to register their septic tank systems.
With his wife Joanne and their children, they attended the launch last Friday.
Joanne said they were delighted with the transformed wetlands on their doorstep.
“It is eco friendly, sustainable, it’s wonderful. The effluent was going in to the river before this,” she said.
The row of houses is included in a planned extension of the sewerage network in Clonaslee. Tenders are now being sought, as well as for Stradbally, Mountrath, Durrow, Rathdowney and Abbeyleix.
Those towns are also in line for new sewage treatment plants.
“We are depending on the Department of the Environment for money for both,” said project manager Padraic Joyce, who hopes work will begin later this year.
Speaking at the launch, County Manager Peter Carey was hopeful of getting money.
“Minister Hogan has been very helpful to us in Laois, and we will be looking to him for more support,” he said.
