Wrong way motorway signs
Laois is already benefiting from NRA investment in motorway signs to stop people driving the wrong way on the busy roads, councillors were told last week.
“IT doesn’t have to happen every day but the consequences can be very serious,” warned Cllr Tom Mulhall as he called for improved signs at interchanges to prevent drivers going the wrong way down onto a motorway.
“I haven’t done it myself but it has been brought to my attention at least three times, particularly in relation to Junction 15,” commented Cllr Mulhall.
Senior Executive Engineer Orla Barrett said instances of drivers going the wrong way down onto the motorway have reduced and she pointed out that the issue was discussed at previous meetings of Laois County Council and An Garda Síochána Joint Committee on Road Safety where NRA Senior Project Manager for Road Safety Harry Cullen was in attendance.
“The NRA have upgraded signs on most of the Laois off ramps by erecting two ‘Wrong Way Turn Back’ signs on each and they are in the process of rolling this measure out nationwide.
“They have also erected electronic signs at Junction 17 Togher Interchange, where a particularly high incidence of the problem was noted. An Garda Síochána advised that the problem has significantly reduced since these measures were taken.” said the Engineer.
