OPW still looking at sites for Garda hq in Portlaoise

The Portlaoise site chosen for a new Garda HQ is no longer top of the list for what would also be the main garda station in Laois and Offaly.

The Office of Public Works confirmed last week they are still looking at sites in Portlaoise for the new Garda Divisional Headquarters.

A spokesperson for the OPW said the Dublin Road site, that had been earmarked for the HQ was not an OPW site and was still owned by the HSE.

“That site is not an OPW site, it is owned by the HSE. A sign for the new Garda Divisional Headquarter was removed last year.”

The spokesperson added that the OPW were still looking at sites.

At an meeting of Portlaoise Town Council earlier this month, Cllr Alan Hand called on the OPW to clarify their future plans for the proposed location of the Garda HQ on the Dublin Road.

Describing the current condition of the existing building on the site as an eyesore, Cllr Hand said that overgrown trees were blocking the light in the Stradbrook Apartments.

The new HQ was promised by former Minister for Justice Michael McDowell ahead of the 2007 General Election.
