Coffee lovers and jobseekers rejoice, because Portlaoise is about to get a large new café by a major Irish coffee chain.

The Kyle Centre shopping centre owned by Dunnes Stores, has applied for permission to convert two units at the front of the centre from retail to café use.

The units have lain idle since it opened a decade ago.

The company intending to open it are Insomnia, who already have a small café in the town, in Heatons in Portlaoise Retail Park.

Portlaoise is getting a new Tapas restaurant too!

Insomnia Coffee Company has 140 coffee shops, in partnership with a range of major retailers.

The planning application was lodged by Dunnes Stores with Laois County Council on November 2, and a decision is to be made on January 5 2018.

It is not yet known how many jobs are expected to be created by the opening.

Plans can be viewed on the council's website.
