Portlaoise U-13s claim title in final game

Portlaoise Town clinched the MSL U13s Major Division Title with this victory over Athlone Town side Willow Park in their final League game of the season in Athlone.

This was the teams second League Title in three seasons and it was well deserved as all the hard work during the season in training and on the pitch paid dividends.

Portlaoise started off very nervously and missed two easy chance in the first 10 minutes when Oran Murphy and Oisin Kiernan were through on goals but shot wide on both occasions.

Portlaoise made the breakthrough on 15 minutes when Aaron Wright raced through the Willow Park defence and scored with a fine strike to the bottom corner of the net.Oran Murphy then hit the crossbar with a brilliant lob from outside the box and on 25 minutes Craig Reddin hit the crossbar with a shot from five yards out after good work by Joe Nevin.

Portlaoise continued to attack the Willow Park defence but their keeper made some fine saves and it stayed 1-0 at the break.

Willow Park then came more into the game in the second half and dominated the game for the first 10 minutes of this half.

Oran Murphy then got the all important second goal after 45 minutes when he scored after good good work by Ross Brennan and Brian Sheehy on the left wing. Aaron Wright then got his second and the Towns third when he finished to the net from just inside the box after good build up play by Joe Nevin Oran Murphy then got his second on 55 minutes when his finished to the net after good build up work by Ronan McEvoy and Fionn Scully to make it 4-0.

Niall Doran and Ruairi Lewis then went close to scoring before the referee blew the final whistle and the celebrations started.

Best for Portlaoise were Sean McCormack Jason Maher Ciaran Rowney Conor Lacken Oisin Kiernan and those already mentioned.Also a special word for Aaron Feane who got out of his sick bed to support his team mates on the day and to David Maher(Coach) and Frank Lewis for all their help during the season. The Management Team would also like to thank the Parents for supporting the team home and away and having the players at training every week.

Portlaoise now meet Willow Park again in the semi-final of the MSL Midlands Cup home and away with dates and times to be confirmed.

The League trophy will be presented to the team at the home leg of the semi-final in Rossleighan Park.
