After losing their last two away league games, Portlaoise finally came away with three points last Sunday.
LSL Premier League Sunday
St Columcille’s 1
. The home side started the brighter and went ahead on five minutes with Graham Domdell running onto a long ball and cutting in from the right shot home fro 15 yards out. Portlaoise responded and Cathal Dunphy almost equalised on 18 minutes only to see his shot kicked of the goaline.
The home side almost went two up on 29 minutes. Pierre Gettaro quickest to react to a left wing cross and his effort just went past Danny Browne’s left post.
St Columcille’s were enjoying most of the play but found clear cut chances hard to come by and suffered a loss when the impressive Michael Blake had to go of injured.
Portlaoise drew level on 41 minutes following a foul on Niall Guillfoyle on the right just outside the penalty box. He took the free kick and coming in at the back post, James Furlong volleyed home. This was Niall’s last involvement as he had to be substituted but before half time both teams were reduced to 10 after an incident in the home team’s penalty area. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with St Columcille’s having the early pressure but again some very good defending by Portlaoise was restricting them to long range efforts with Graham Domdell the main attacking threat for the home side. Portlaoise were to score on 74 minutes through a swerving shot from Shane Brophy. This seemed to give the impetus to Portlaoise and Brophy was involved in the last goal on 87 minutes. He picked up a loose pass and found Alan Dunne unmarked and Dunne scored with a shot from 12 yards out.
Portlaoise had to work very hard for the points but all players involved gave it there best against a very competitive St Columcille’s side.
