Abbeyleix Junior Hockey continued its upward spiral with some positive performances in the first half of the 2011/2012 season.

The U-16s have played three matches in the West Leinster League, winning against Tullamore and North Kildare before succumbing to a strong Newbridge in their third game. In spite of losing a large number of players from last year’s side, the team is well positioned to challenge for League honours again in the second half of the season especially if Alison Bailey, Sophie Martyn and Isobel Black continue to improve at the same rate as in first half of season.

The u-14s are unbeaten so far this season after a late flurry against Newbridge scoring two goals in last 10 minutes to secure a draw. Earlier wins against Tullamore and North Kildare saw solid performances from Nicole Moynan, Ella Barrett, and Mathew Odlum. The West Leinster cup takes place in January and February of next year.

The U-12s and U-10s had good performances at blitzes in Naas and Kilcock, fielding three teams in both age groups and also participated in an all boys blitz in Kilkenny. Sarah Fingleton, Luke Poinsion, Camilla Alisausraite and Jacob twins Emily and Sarah lead the way for U-12s, while John Moynan and Una Rafter have performed consistently for U-10s.

Big thanks to all who supported our Coffee morning and home bake sale on December 11, there was a great turnout from players, parents and supporters. Thanks to all who brought and bought some of the fine Christmas fayre and who bought tickets for our raffle – a social and financially rewarding morning.

Hockey now takes a break for the Christmas season and will return on Sunday, January 8 (Saturday, January 7 for U-16s) and all teams will be in action before January is out. A Happy Christmas to all and a Big Thank you for all your help in 2011 and looking forward to another successful year in 2012.
