An injury time headed goaline clearance from Eoghan White ultimately secured the three points for Portlaoise on Saturday night in a very scrappy game.
A strong crossfield wind did not make conditions easy for the players but the visiting team adapted much better to them.
The first half saw Portlaoise with most of the attacking play but clearcut chances were few despite some good play out wide by Joe Delaney and Paul Cahillane and it was no suprise that it was scoreless at half time.
The start of the second half saw the visitors begin to put pressure on Portlaoise and they had several long range shots. The game’s only goal came on 72 minutes. After some pressure in midfield Portlaoise won the ball back and Shane Brophy played a through ball from midfield that put in Paul Cahillane who coolly shot under the advancing keeper.
The pace of the game lifted noticeably as R/S went in search of an equaliser and Danny Browne made several good catches from inswinging corners. In one of the few good passing moves of the game on 81 minutes Darren Rogers, Paul Cahillane and Shane Brophy combined to set up Stephen Goggin who saw his volley from 16 yards out well saved.
It took some very gritty defending in the last few minutes to keep R/S at bay as they pushed for an equaliser but at the death Eoghan White kept Portlaoise in front.
Portlaoise Danny Browne; Cathal Dunphy, Eoghan White, Mark Brennan, Niall Guilfoyle; Joe Delaney (Shane Brophy), Stephen Goggin (Jason Bergin), Brian Bowe, Shaun Tobin, Paul Cahillane, Darren Rogers (Alan Dunne)
