Aidan McGovern and former Abbeyleix goalkeeper Nicole Cranny have secured scholarships to American colleges. Aidan is off to Longwood University Virginia on July 30 to study a Business degree. He starts his pre-season training on August 6 and will be part of a team playing in the NCAA Division 1 ‘Big South’ Conference League against teams from North and South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

Nicole is leaving for Orlando on August 2. She will be a Junior student in Montverde Academy for two years where she will play approx forty games against other High Schools from around the USA. The Soccer Scholarships awarded to Nicole and Aidan are a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their football careers while at the same time studying for a degree which will be invaluable later in life.

Meanwhile, at home, Aaron Rafter, Colm Poole and Evan McEvoy are currently training and playing for Airtricity League clubs, St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers. Aaron opted for St Pat’s, while Colm and Evan chose Rovers. Hopefully this move will offer the boys a greater opportunity to fulfil an ambition to play at the highest level.

Abbeyleix AFC are very proud of these young players and wish them the best of luck in the future.
