O'Brien and Lane prevail at charity tournament

The Dickie McDonald annual charity event took place in Abbeyleix Tennis Club on August 14. The competition welcomed 54 players from various clubs including Rathangan, Carlow, Athy and Mountmellick.

The competition was a great success with mixed doubles pairings battling it out in 3 graded sections to come out on top. In the C section Tom Lane and Emma O’ Brien from Athy got the better of Maura O’ Loughlin and David Donnelly from Rathangan.

John Goff and Mary McCrann from Rathangan beat the Abbeyleix duo of Siobhan Kirk and Tim Mounsey in the B final and David and Fiona Brophy got the better of Mary Daly and Gerry Grealish in an all-Abbeyleix A final.

The Perpetual Cup was presented to Emma O’ Brien and Tom Lane who were overall winners on a percentage of games won basis. They thanked all involved on the day and praised the club on a job well done.

This event was again sponsored by Maureen and Michael Killeen of Laois Hire to whom we are extremely grateful. The McDonald family and our chairperson Emily thanked all competitors, organisers and helpers on the day and assured all that the funds raised would be put to great use in their sons special needs care home.

Overall, the day was a great success with over €1200 raised for the care home. Our Open Week is the next big event in our club which runs from September 11th. More details can be found on www.abbeyleixtennis.com
