The first competition of the 2012 Horseshoe Pitching Season got underway in Tegral Sportsfield Athy on Saturday, April 21. This was the Gouleyduff Pairs Competition for the JR Perry Perpetual Cup and prizes. There was a marvellous turn out of pitchers for this event with the Wexford boys out in force.

In the earlier rounds there was some wonderful pitching with some of the games finishing 21-20. One of these was the game between two Wexford pairs from the Woodsmen club Bunclody, Paddy Connors and his partner Chris McDonald and Michael Redmond and his partner Tom Connors. This was the best game of the evening with ace for ace all the way to the finish Paddy Connors and Chris McDonald just shading it by one ace.

The semi-finals were not as close with Paddy Byrne and Denis Ryan from the host club having it rather easy against Wexford pair John Joe Byrne and John Giltrap from Woodsmen club ending on score of 21-12. The other semi was much the same with Paddy Connors and Chris McDonald beating the two Larkins, Denis Snr. and his son Denis Jun. from the Monart club Wexford 21-10.

The final never lived up to the top class pitching seen in earlier rounds with Byrne and Ryan running out winners over Connors and McDonald 21-11 to take the JR Perry Perpetual Cup and Killarney Crystal for 2012. The Presentation was made by Jim Kelly on behalf of JR Perry Ltd.
