There will be two teams relegated from the Laois SFC in 2013 after proposals to restructure the championship were ratified at last night’s county board meeting.
There will now be two teams relegated this year, and in each of the next three years, with one team coming up from the IFC. At the end of the four year cycle the SFC will be reduced from the current number, 16, to 12 teams, while the IFC will be increased from eight to 12.
It is believed the restructure was passed by just three votes at Monday night’s county board meeting in the Laois GAA Offices at Park Side. With Portlaoise having won the last six Laois SFC titles in a row and many clubs feeling the affects of emigration and the loss of players, it is hoped that the reduction in the numbers of teams in the SFC, and subsequent increase in the IFC, will result in more competitive championships.
