Portlaoise U-15s continued on their way towards league glory last week with two wins that moves them nine points clear of Tullamore who have a game in hand.
They began the week with a 5-1 win over Abbeyleix Athletic on St Patrick’s Day in Rossleighan Park. A Niall Doran penalty, a goal from Aaron Wright and a volley from Fionn Scully put the three up but Abbeyleix pulled one back by the break. The second-half was all Portlaoise as goals from another Niall Doran penalty and Brian Sheehy left them 5-1 winners in this local derby.
Best for Portlaoise were Sean McCormack, Charlie O’Brien, Jason Maher, Brian Sheeh,y Ruairi Lewis, Ronan McEvoy, Fionn Scully, Jack Langton and man of the match Niall Doran. Abbeyleix were best served by Ronan Quinn, Thomas McCann, Colum Dunne, James Keyes, Diarmuid Conway and Charlie Whelan.
Portlaoise travelled to Birr Town last Saturday and came away with the three points and a 3-0 win. Portlaoise opened well but lost Niall Doran through injury on 12 minutes and it affected the performance of the team as he has been very impressive all season.
On 15 minutes Portlaoise went ahead when a brillant pass from Ruairi Lewis sent Fionn Scully in on goals and he finished in style with a brilliant volley into the top corner.
Portlaoise then went 2-0 ahead on 20 minutes when Ronan McEvoy set Charlie O Brien up and he finished with a low shot past the Birr keeper. Birr had two efforts late in the half but Sean McCormack saved well on both occasions and it finished 2-0 at the break.
Birr came out for the second half in better form and dominated the first 20 minutes of the half but could not break down the Portlaoise rearguard. On 65 minutes the Town went 3-0 ahead with the goal of the season so far when from a Sean McCormack kick out, Jack Langton sent Ronan McEvoy away on the right wing and his brilliant cross into the box was finished low into the bottom corner by a brilliant overhead kick by Fionn Scully.
This was how it finished at the end and Portlaoise Town took another important three points in their quest for three in row MSL Major Division Titles. Best for Portlaoise were Sean McCormack, Charlie O’Brien, Aaron Feane, Ruairi Lewis, Ross Brennan, Fionn Scully and man of the match Ronan McEvoy.
Portlaoise next league match is this Saturday against Banagher in Rossleighan Park with a 12.30pm kick-off.
