Talks to scrap VECs in Laois and Offaly start

LAOIS and Offaly VECs have begun talks to begin the process of setting up a new agency responsible for training and education in both counties.

Laois VEC Chairperson Cllr Mary Sweeney told fellow committee members that she would be meeting her Offaly counterpart, while CEO Anne O’Keeffe has also been invited to meet with staff from Offaly VEC.

In her report to the November Laois VEC meeting at Portarlington Adult Education Centre, Ms O’Keeffe explained the focus is on creating an Education and Training Board (ETB) fit for purpose, rather than on trying to merge two existings VECs.

“A Steering Committee is in place and it was agreed the way forward involves identifying critical issues that must be addressed by both VECs in the period before, during and immediately following the establishment of the ETB,,” she said.

Task Groups have been set up in finance, human resources, information technology, youth work, adult education and communications.

Ms O’Keeffe said working together would be crucial to sucess.

“Collaboration and crossover between the groups was identified as being important to the success of the project,” she said.
