The parish lotto jackpot is now heading for €17,600. On August 25 the jackpot was €17,300 and it was not won. Small winners were €30 Mick Walsh, €25 Margaret Prior, and €20 Collette Dunne. The lotto on September 8 will be in the Castle Arms Hotel. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 on the night of the draw to be included in the jackpot.


Durrow/Cullohill parish anglers held a pike fishing competition on Grantstown Lake on Sunday for the Harold Lawlor Cup. Fishing conditions were difficult and very few fish were caught. Winner was Pat Dunphy.


There was a great response to the blood transfusion service in Durrow on Thursday August 21, with over 129 people donating blood. Many thanks to everyone who gave their time and blood to help save lives. With a shortage of O+ there was a good response to the request by text for this blood group. There were two awards given out: for 20 donations a gold award was given to Matthew Sims, Boleybeg, Abbeyleix and a silver award for 10 donations was given to Liam McEvoy, Aughmacart, Cullohill.

Lime Kiln

There will be a lime kiln demonstration at Michael Bergin’s, Ballycarran, Jenkintown on Wednesday August 27 3-8pm and Saturday 30 2-8pm.

Kilkenny Archaeological Society, in the spirit of Heritage Week, has teamed up with Conahy Heritage Society and Conahy Vintage Club, to host this event. This kiln, which is quite sizeable, has had some repairs and a tidy up enhancing its appearance and visibility. As this kiln, about 18 ft deep, could hold about 6 tons of coal and 20 tons of limestone, a smaller demonstration model will be on site.

There will be information on the formation of limestone and its distribution, to the history and uses of lime, the production of lime on site and demonstrations on its use. Also on view will be some vintage equipment.

This is a unique event and may not be repeated. Refreshments will also be available.

Abbeyleix Golf Club

There will be an autumn festival of golf at Abbeyleix Golf Club commencing on Wednesday 3 with an open two person team event.

The festival continues until Sunday 7, with a variety of open competitions to suit visitors and members alike.

Best of luck to Conall Whelan who will be representing Ireland in the Junior Home International Orienteering Championships in Oban, Scotland next weekend.

Conall was introduced to orienteering by his leaders in Kilkenny Scouts and has been training with the Irish squad for the past year. Anyone interested in trying the sport should visit www.orienteering.ie.

A local event will be held in Castlecomer Discovery Park on October 26.
