MONSTER AUCTION

The Rock GAA is holding a monster auction on Sunday November 23 at 1pm in the clubhouse. The club needs items to auction such as household and farming items, furniture (good condition), working electrical goods, fuel, fuel vouchers, bric-a-brac, gift vouchers etc. All items must be sold on the day so there’ll be bargains aplenty. COMMUNITY CARE

The Community Care Meals on Wheels annual church gate collection will be held on Saturday and Sunday November 15 and 16. Your support would be appreciated.

MACRA TABLE QUIZ

BADMINTON

Practice is held on Monday nights at 8.45pm and Wednesday nights at 8.30pm in the Macra hall. Hard luck to the men’s grade 6 team who lost 4-0 to Royston. Well done to the ladies team who drew 2-2 with Kildare. New members contact Trevor 087 9143226.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

The next meeting is on Wednesday November 19 at 10.30 in the MDA. The annual Christmas dinner and party is being held in O’Loughlin’s Hotel on Sunday December 14 at 7.30pm with transport provided. Details to follow at the meeting on November 19.

The usual activities are: Mondays: Boccia in Macra Hall 7.30pm.  Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon (free bus from MDA at 11.15am. Thursdays: music and song in St. Vincent’s Hospital. Fridays: ‘Go for Life Games’ Macra Hall 7.30pm. New members always welcome, contact 086 0618955.

COMMEMORATION DVD

Mountmellick WW1 Research and Commemoration Group are screening a DVD of their highly successful WW1 Commemoration Concert ‘Saluting the Brave’ in The Balcony Theatre on Thursday November 13 at 8pm. Admission is €5 and the DVD will be available for sale on the night. Concert goers will be entitled to a discount on the full price of the DVD. The concert is a collection of WW1 themed music, dance and drama, performed by Emer Dunne and Drua and featuring local artists.

SOCIAL DANCING

Lessons in waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, jive and slosh starts on Tuesday November 18 at An Sean Chistin, Irey, Ballyfin and will continue for five weeks from 8pm to 9.30pm each night. All abilities welcome. Further details from Maureen 0876482038.

YARN BOMBING

Yarn Bombing Mountmellick meets in the Methodist Hall (behind Methodist Church) on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. All interested in being part of this project are invited to come along and join us.

LOOMING AT LIBRARY

Loom banding sessions continue every Saturday at the library from 11am to 12.30pm and on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm. Call in and check out our folder of loom banding ideas for you to make. All welcome.

KNITTING GROUP

The library knitting/crochet group meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Bring along your needles and wool and join us for a cuppa and a chat.

SHOEBOX APPEAL

Team Hope Christmas Appeal shoeboxes can be left into the library. Please leave them in by Tuesday November 11. The library closes at 7.30pm on Tuesdays.

Entries from the recent colouring and drawing competitions will feature in the gallery for the month of November. Call in and see all the entries hanging in the gallery.

CIORCAL COMHRÁ

The Ciorcal continues on Thursdays in the Library from 10am to 11am. All welcome to this opportunity to use whatever Irish you have. Ask in the Library for details of a Kiddie Comhrá which is hoped will also start after the mid-term break.

COMHALTAS

In November the group hope to run a sean-nós dancing workshop. It will be on a Saturday, details later. €10 per person child or adult and will be on a first come basis. Places are limited to a max of 15 people.

Science week

This year’s Science Week takes place from November 9 to 16. The Silence of the Tenrecs, a unique opportunity to learn about the science of wildlife research and conservation takes place at noon on Wednesday November 12 in the Mountmellick Library. The Heritage Office of Laois County Council will deliver free science workshops to primary schools in Mountmellick.

Soccer club Strictly Come Dancing

Mountmellick United Soccer Club will host Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday February 14 in the Heritage Hotel at 8pm. MC Frank Forde.

Sponsorship cards for dancers are available now.

All of the dancers will represent various groups/clubs/organisations and are selling tickets at €20 each to raise funds for the Soccer Club. Dance rehearsals start this week.

scór na nóg

Mountmellick Community Arts Centre host this year’s GAA annual Scór na nÓg competition on Friday, November 14 from 7pm. Registration from 6pm. Open to all GAA members aged 17 and under.

Application forms now available for the Laois Community awards which are on December 2 in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.
