This year is the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918) or the ‘Great War’ as it became known. Thousands of Irish men of all dominations were killed in that conflict and amongst those thousands were thirty men from Stradbally and its surrounding area. Most of them were forgotten for the brave sacrifice they made and indeed remain unknown except to their immediate families.

‘Stradbally Remembers their Fallen of the Great War’ committee intends to rectify this oversight by holding an Ecumenical Prayer Service in St. Patricks Church on the 21st November, 2014, at 7.30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The following is a list of the soldiers from Stradbally who were killed in the ‘Great War’. Patrick Bambrick, Frank Boyd, Norman Boyd, Samuel Boyd, William Buggy, Walter Butcher, Peter Carroll, Daniel Cotton, Michael Dempsey, Morgan Delaney, John Donohue,

Michael Dowling, Thomas Dowling, Simeon Robert Empey, William Francis Flynn, Robert Kenneth Gurd, Michael Hosey, Edward Hutchinson, James Kelly, (South Lancashire Regiment), James Kelly, (Royal MunsterFusiliers), Edward Lawlor, Charles Lewis,

George Lewis, Ernest Luttrell, Andrew Monaghan, George Porter, William Stephens, Frank Walsh, John Wilbank, Patrick Dolan, Vicarstown.

This is not a definite list of all from the area who lost their lives in the First World War, there may be others. If anybody has any further names of loved ones who perished in that conflict, please contact:

Fr. Jim O’Connell 0868102675, Rev. Alec Purser Rector, James Deegan 0862428655.
