St Brigid’s Community Alert Group are holding a table quiz in Portarlington Golf Club on Saturday March 21 at 8pm. €5 per person or table of 4 €20. We will make up tables, or if you can fill a table all the better. Our quiz master has assured us that the questions are not too mind boggling. All proceeds are in aid of the ongoing costs of running our text alert in the community.
Lea Castle Committee Say Thanks
The Lea Castle Conservation Group would like to thank all those who supported their recent coffee morning fundraiser in the French Quarter restaurant. In particular they would like to thank Portarlington Coder Dojo and Killenard Historical Society for their very generous donations and all those who gave so generously on the day. A special word of thanks to the owner of the restaurant Mr Eamonn Carroll for hosting the event. The event was a great success and raised almost €1,000 for the project. The group are now busy preparing for the official launch of the Lea Castle Conservation report later this month and for the submission of their 2015 funding application to the Heritage Council.
ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
The Portarlington St Patrick’s Day parade will be taking place on Tuesday March 17. Portarlington St Vincent de Paul would like to thank everyone who supported the recent coffee day in our shop on Main Street. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make the day a success. Congratulations to Seodhna Hoey from Droughill on been selected as the Laois Juvenile sports star 2014. In 2014 Seodhna won three gold county medals for U17 shot and discus and U18 shot. She won four Leinster gold medals for shot and discus, one silver for discus and two bronze for hammer and discus.
Seodhna also won all Ireland gold for discus, silver for shot and three bronze medals for discus and hammer. She won the All Ireland Schools Discus event. She then represented Leinster in the schools Tailteann games where she won silver in both hammer and discus. From the Tailteann games she qualified to represent Ireland in the International Schools which took place in Cardiff.
She threw a new personal best of over 53m and finished in 5th place, this was a huge achievement. Seodhna’s parents Oisin and Ashling and all her extended family are extremely proud of her for all the hard work, time and dedication she and her coach Joe Salmon put in to her training. Hopefully 2015 will be as successful, and the people of Portarlington would like to wish Seodhna all the best for the future.
OPEN DAY & FAMILY FUN DAY
Just 4 Kids Creche Whitefields Portarlington will be hosting a family fun day on Saturday March 28 from 12-2 pm. Everyone is welcome to come including family and friends. On the day the activities will include craft stalls, face painting, Jecca the Clown, nutritionist Collette Whelan to speak and show you samples of food for children, Kathy Conroy montessori teacher to speak about montessori education and many more fun activities. Make up artist Amie Moran will be here on the day to give advice on all your make up needs.
We will be hosting the Great Irish Bake Sale on the day; all proceeds go to Temple Street Children’s Hospital. All cake donations will be greatly appreciated. Competitions will be held on the day to win free child’s places on our Easter camp. We will be also holding a competition for a sum of money to be won to donate to a charity of your choice. .
Deepest sympathy to the family of Doney O’Meara Annamoe and formerly Shinrone, Offaly who passed away on Wednesday March 4. Doney was predeceased by his loving son Patrick. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Ann, daughters Michelle, Danielle and Elaine, his grandchildren Lorcan, Darragh and Lucy, his extended family and many friends. Requiem mass took place on Saturday March 7 in St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michaels Cemetery.

Bernie will be sadly missed by her loving husband Martin, daughters Jeniffer, Gillian, Jacqueline and Naomi, son Martin Jnr, her extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place in St Michael’s Church on Tuesday March 3 with funeral after to Newlands Cross Crematorium.
