May Lynch will host her annual Coffee Morning for the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day, on this Friday March 13, from 10 to 3pm, at her home in 3 Harbour Court. All welcome to support this worthy cause.

slieve bloom assoc

A well-attended meeting of the Slieve Bloom Association in the ICA Hall Mountmellick recently, had a report on the crowning of the ‘Goat Queen’ and the trip up to the Bracket Stones on Spink Hill for the Festival of Imbolc. The Memorial Plaque for founder member Paddy Lowry is to be erected in Kinnitty at a ceremony held in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary celebrations on Sunday, April 12. A reasonable priced meal and entertainment is planned: Contact Mary at 057 862 8650 to book a place.

Next meeting is on Thursday, March 19 in the Poet’s Cottage, Camross, at 8:30pm when details for the 40th Celebration will be finalised.

DRAMA FESTIVAL

The 25th festival continues this week at 8pm nightly in the Arts Centre. The committee are very grateful to all their sponsors, particularly main sponsor Mountmellick Credit Union for their support.

MISSION ALIVE COLLECTION

The annual Mission Alive church gate collection is on Saturday and Sunday March 14 & 15 in Mountmellick and in Clonaghadoo at all Masses. All money collected will be sent to the AIDS/HIV Orphan Project in Lusaka in Zambia. The group thanks you for your generosity in the past and hope you will give generously to the collection.  Donations can also be given to Fr Noel Dunphy.

DAFFODIL DAY

Daffodil day the Irish Cancer Society’s major fundraiser takes place on Friday March 27. Proceeds are used for many projects from research to the care of cancer sufferers. SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE 

Cluichí tré Gaeilge do páistí (games for children through Irish) is on Wednesday March 11 from 3.45pm to 4.14pm for ages 8 to12. Have fun decorating pizza (with a green theme for St Patrick’s Day) on Friday March 13 from 3.45pm to 4.30pm for ages 8 to 12. Both events are free but booking is advisable as places are limited. KNITTING GROUP

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Special Olympics Ireland urgently requires volunteers in Laois to help with the annual charity collection day on Friday April 24. The money will be used to ensure that Special Olympics Ireland can offer people with an intellectual disability the opportunity to participate in sport in their area. SCOUTS

At the recent Investiture beavers, cubs, scouts and ventures renewed their promise and were welcomed into the Brotherhood of Scouting. The group was congratulated on a carol singing fundraiser that raised €200 for the Ben & Jake Connolly fund and Childline.

FASHION SHOW

Scout Group are holding a fashion show in the Sports Centre on Thursday April 9, tickets €10, clothes from No. 1 Boutique, Dunne’s Stores, Jack & Jones, Kearns & Cuddy Menswear, Blossom Time and Ann Grumbley Bridalwear. Tables available for anyone who wishes to display their crafts/ baking, etc €20 per table, contact Annette at 087 9438430. Doors open at 7 pm for craft sales, fashion show at 8pm.  Teas & coffee served while you browse. Launch of Fashion Show is in the MDA on Wednesday March 11 at 8pm, with 4 tickets to be won.

Yarnbomb meetings on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm in the Methodist Hall. All who can knit and crochet or who would like to learn are welcome to come along and join the fun.

THE ROCK GAA

The Irish Wildlife Trust Laois Offaly Branch and Coillte have teamed up with The Rock GAA to create nearly 1.5 acres of new woodland on the club’s grounds as part of National Tree Week. The event takes place on Sunday March 22, 11am to 12.30pm. Planting trees in sports grounds will provide shelter for the pitches on wet and windy days, make the grounds more visually attractive and attract wildlife.

The work is led by the Irish Wildlife Trust, as part of kid’s programme the Badger Club, with the help of volunteers from The Rock GAA. All will get a chance to plant some trees. Bird boxes will also be erected. Refreshments in the club house afterwards. A fun day outdoors for the whole family.  Lotto: No jackpot winner.
