Slieve bloom assoc
The first meeting of the Slieve Bloom Association for 2013 will take place in the Parish Hall, Clonaslee on Thursday, January 24 at 8:30pm. All members are asked to attend as we will be discussing the upcoming Imbolg Festival Walk to Spink Hill in February. We will also be discussing our involvement in The Gathering events through the Ardeireann Lunasa Festival.
Macra panto rehearsals are well underway at the moment. This year’s panto is Robinson Crusoe and promises to be one of the best ever. It will run from Wednesday February 13 to Sunday February 17 and tickets will soon be available. The pantomime launch will be held this Friday January 25 at 8pm in the Macra hall. This will showcase the wealth of talent in our panto and will feature performances from both the adult and children’s cast as a taster for the show in February. Light refreshments will be served on the night and all are welcome.
Well done to the badminton teams who played so well in Carlow at the weekend. Congratulations are extended to Rathdowney Macra on progressing to the semi-final of the capers competition.
MOUNTMELLICK GYMNASTICS CLUB
Introduction to gymnastics classes will take place in the main hall of the Owenass Hall on Saturday January 26. Ages and times: 3 to 4yrs at 10am, 5 to 6 years at 11am and 7years plus at noon. For information or book a place please contact Mary at 086 7914933.
This year’s pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Monday July 15 to Wednesday July 24 at a cost of €770 per person sharing. We will stay at The Solitude Hotel. The spiritual leaders will be Fr Mícheál Murphy PP and Fr Pat Hennessy PP. Contact Eleanor at 087 7670915.
Under 8 football training will take place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.
Patrick O’Sullivan is playing at the next monthly social on Saturday January 26 in the Owenass Hall. Patrick is a previous winner of the Glór Tíre talent competition currently running on Wednesday nights on T na G and all are delighted that he found time in his busy schedule to be able to travel to Mountmellick. There will be dancing from 9.30pm to 12.30am.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next fortnightly group meeting will be in the MDA at 10.30am on Wednesday January 23. New members are always welcome. At the moment the weekly activities for members are as follows. Mondays: Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: dancing with Maureen Culleton starts again on January 23 from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital 2pm to 4pm.
In the next few weeks the committee will run the art, drama, quiz and talent area finals, details later. For clubs wishing to get involved in the Gaelic football, hurling or camogie events please contact 085 7138940.
Classes are back at their usual times. For those attending cupla focal remember to bring your sentence sheets as we continue to build vocabulary. The first session of 2013 will be held on Sunday February 3 in the ICA Hall from 4.30pm for youngest players and from 5pm for more advanced players. All our members and those who like listening to traditional music welcome.
The annual concert will be held on Friday March 22 in the Arts Centre. This year Mountmellick Comhaltas marks 25 years of holding classes and 21 years affiliated to Comhaltas so it is hoped to mark these momentous achievements.
Comhaltas hopes to run an event for the year of the Gathering so if any member has any suggestions please let the committee know.
COMPUTER COURSES AT MDA

Tom Joyce’s exhibition of oil paintings will feature in the library gallery for the month of January. ‘Book Buddies’ junior book club (7 to 9 age group) will meet on Tuesday February 5 from 4pm to 4.30pm. They will discuss a selection of books by author Michael Morpurgo. ‘Rapid Readers’ (10 to 12 age group) will meet Wednesday February 6 from 4pm to 4.30pm. The book for discussion is ‘Colm and the Lazarus Key’ by Kieran Mark Crowley.
The knitting circle meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to noon in the library. Drop in for cuppa and a chat. All donations of wool would be greatly appreciated.
LAOIS MARTIAL ART
Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punchbags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.
