The Portlaoise Credit Union 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place at the Heritage Hotel on Monday, January 28. The delay the AGM is largely due to a new Central Bank of Ireland requirement for Credit Unions to submit audited accounts for each financial year and await their approval before arranging AGM’s. See page 46.

PARISH NOVENA

Portlaoise Parish Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs from February 13 to April 10 Ash Wednesday 3 for nine weeks every Wednesday at 7:30pm. Petitions will be remembered and prayed for throughout the nine weeks. Speakers include: Hector O hEochagáin 2FM, Brian Cody hurling coach, Brian Crowley MEP, Frances Black singer, John Longergan retired prison governor, Mary Kennedy RTE Nationwide, Fr Liam Lawton composer, Joanne O’Rioradan Young Person of the Year, Johnny Murtagh jockey.

St Patricks Day Parade

The Chairman of the Portlaoise Patrick’s Day Committee Ger Whelan has called an emergency meeting for this Thursday, January 10 in O’Loughlin’s Hotel at 8pm, Unless there is major interest shown by the public and members of the local business community in getting involved in the committee, this year’s parade may not go ahead.

Holy Angels Plot

The Hospital Management Team at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise proposes to establish a consultative forum of parents and other interested parties to review the most appropriate way to upgrade the ‘Holy Angels’ Plot in Portlaoise Cemetery. In this regard, a briefing meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, January, 10 at 7pm. The meeting will take place in the Seminar Room in the Library Building which is close to the main reception at the hospital. Confirmation of intention to attend the meeting is not required. GUIDE DOG COLLECTION

Laois Guide Dogs Annual Church Gate Collection takes place on the weekend of January 12/13. Volunteers needed to collect at all Mass times, contact Richard Connell at 087-2776450 or 057-8622688 if you can help. There will also be a collection at St. Peters Church. The Guide Dogs plan for 2013 is to train 200 people and this plan will change the life of a visually impaired person or a family of a child with Autism.

The Heath GAA Open Day

The Heath GAA club’s Juvenile Open Day takes place from 11am on February 10 at the club grounds. There will be fun coaching sessions for all children in attendance, while the inflatable GAA pitch from the Leinster Council will also be there on the day. COUCH TO 5KM

Portlaoise Athletic Club are running a 10 week fitness programme ‘COUCH TO 5K’ which will start on Tuesday, January 8 6pm-7pm at the running track beside Portlaoise College. Suicide Prevention.

A 2 day workshop designed to teach participants the skills to be in a position to recognise and help someone whose life may be at risk will take place in the Parish Centre on 16th and 17th January, 2013. Blessing of Babies

To celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord on Sunday, January 13 there will be a blessing of babies from 2.30pm at Parish Church. Children baptised during 2012 are invited but all are welcome. Bring baptisimal candle.

LATE JAMES COOSAN

Condolences to the family of the late James ‘Shem’ Crossan, of The Heath and of late Wolfe Tone Court Mountmellick who passed away on December 19 in the loving care of all the staff of St Vincent’s Hospital, Mountmellick. Husband of the late Molly, James is deeply regretted by his sons Ger, Michael and James, daughter Catherine, daughter-in-law Margaret, brother Paddy, sisters Pauline and Betty, relatives, neighbours and friends.
