Best of luck to the Portlaoise senior footballers in the Leinster Senior Club Final against the Dublin champions Ballymun Kickhams in Mullingar on Sunday, December 9. When Portlaoise last won the All-Ireland Club Championship, they defeated Ballymun in the Leinster decider.

parish school enrolment correction

Scoil Mhuire, Sacred Heart, and Scoil Bhride parish national schools are now accepting junior infant enrolments for next year. Enrolment forms are available from the schools. Please bring copy of birth cert and baptisimal cert. We wish to apologise for any confusion caused by last week’s note.


The Portlaoise Gospel Choir will sing at 12.30 pm mass in St Peter and Pauls ChurcH on Sunday, December 16 and will also sing at a concert in St Peters Church of

Ireland at 6.30 pm the same evening. On Sunday, December 23 they will sing in Shaen Hospital from 1.30-2.30 pm and in in the Kyle shopping centre from 3-6pm. At 8pm the choir will participate in a carol service along with other choirs at St Peter and Pauls parish Church Portlaoise.


The 7th Portlaoise Tidy Towns Tidy Estates Awards will take place on Monday, December 10 in County Hall at 8pm. All residents will be notified. The competition, which is in its 17th year, is sponsored by Portlaoise Town Council and Andrew Cremin of the EBS.


The switching onf of the Christmas tree lights lights and crib on Portlaoise’s Market Sq takes place on Saturday, December 8 at 5pm. Santa will be there and St Joseph’s Accordian Band will play. This is the third year that the band have erected and lit the crib at Our Lady’s Shrine but the band have been erecting the christmas trees for many years.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Portlaoise Pantomime Group will present their 29th annual production “Jack and the Beanstalk” in the Dunamaise Arts Centre Portlaoise. The panto runs in January from 19-26. Matinees on Saturday 19, Sunday, 20, and Saturday 26 at 2.30pm. Shows nightly at 8pm. in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets are now available from the Dunamaise Box Office. St Vincent de Paul in association with Portlaoise Retail Park will have an official collection point from Friday., December 7 to Sunday, December 9. Please support your local community with all donations greatly appreciated, and give a helping hand to struggling families this Christmas. Mothercare will continue to accept donations up until December 20. Call down for a cup of coffee with 50 c from each cup going to SVP and enter raffles to win some great spot prizes.

Portlaoise Macra 60th

Portlaoise Macra will celebrate 60 years since its foundation in the newly refurbished hall on Saturday, December 8 with a blessing of the hall at 8.30pm, followed by music and dance with “Top Note”. Christmas Comedy Night

Portlaoise GAA Christmas comedy night Thursday, December 20 in Portlaoise GAA centre at 8:30pm. Tickets €10 available from committee members.


There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when the numbers were drawn on Thursday, November 29. The numbers drawn were 10, 11, 18,26. The match 3s received €53 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.


Sale of work takes place on Friday, December 7 from 12-5pm and the Patient Christmas Party takes place on Thursday, December 13. The public is also asked to suppor the Superquinn Cuisle Centre appeal. Volunteers needed to sell Christmas cards at the Shopping Centre. Contact 868 1492.

Portlaoise Singers

The Portlaoise Singers will be performing in the Heritage Hotel on Monday, December 17. This year the group will be performing songs from South Pacific. The choir which is now in its 39th year, features singers from all over Laois. The show starts at 8pm and all are welcome.

Scrap for The HEATH NS

The Parents Council for the Heath National School is holding a Scrap Metal Drive on Saturday, December 15. A trailer will be provided beside the school between 10 am and 3pm ONLY, for items. Items accepted - farm machinery, cars, washing machines, dryers, bikes, car and truck parts, old wheel barrows, clean food tins, all metal waste ect. Items not accepted Plastic items, fridges ( because of the gas ) Gas bottles, T.V’s or computer monitors. Items can be collected by prior arrangement. Contact Peter on 087 6878063. Congratulations to Catherine Whelan on receiving the Laois Adult Community Games Award. Catherine has put in huge work at local level with the very successful Heath area who have enjoyed fantastic results at National Level with rounders, draughts, talent, art, athletics etc. Catherine has been instrumental in all these successes keeping the administration side in a healthy state. Catherine is also the serving county treasurer for many years and in the current economic climate it is no easy task but she takes it all in her stride. See Sport.

On Friday, December 7 next, a member of the Portlaoise Pioneer Association will visit the schools in the Parish to speak to the Confirmation classes about the Pioneer Association. Laois Footballer Ross Munnelly has been invited by Portlaoise Pioneers to speak at the 7:30pm Mass that evening as part of the Parish Confirmation Programme.

Divine Mercy

Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter and Paul’s Parish Church, Portlaoise on Wednesday, December 5. Rosary at 7pm followed by Mass at 7:30pm.

Condolences to the family of the late Brigid Styles, 5 New Road who passed away last week. Removal from her residence on Sunday, November 25th, to arrive at the Parish Church for 12.30 Requiem Mass. Burial in St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
