Mountmellick’s Darkness into Light 5k walk/run in aid of the free suicide prevention service Pieta House is now open for registration. The walk takes place on Saturday May 11, setting off before dawn at 4am from Mountmellick GAA Club around the town. All are encouraged to join in this uplifting event which takes place in 19 locations simultaneously around Ireland as dawn breaks, symbolising going from the darkness of depression back to the light. Register now and get a free t-shirt. Adults €25, OAP/ jobseeker/student €15, Family €65, groups of 5+ €20pp, children under 12 free but must be accompanied by an adult. Register online at dil.pieta.ie. Forms also available in shops, the credit union and from committee members. Dress warmly, dogs welcome on a lead.

COMMUNITY GAMES SPIKEBALL

Mountmellick Community Games will hold Spikeball (a junior version of volleyball) trials/training in Mountmellick Smith’s Field on Friday April 26 and Friday May 3 at 5pm. This is open to boys and girls who are still u14 on July 31 2013 (If you turn 14 years on August 1, that is fine). All are welcome. There will be a registration fee of €3.50 per child.

COMHALTAS

It is time to start thinking about the Laois Fleadh again. It is being organised this year by Ratheniska Comhaltas with the bulk of the competitions in Stradbally. Closing date for entries to the competitions is April 30. Application forms can be collected from the desk at classes on Tuesday nights. Competitions are from u9 to senior so there is plenty of opportunity to take part. The Leinster Fleadh is in Edenderry in July and the All-Ireland in Derry in August.

COMMUNITY GAMES

At the moment the county finals for the track and field events are on June 23 in St Abban’s. This is to be confirmed. Therefore Mountmellick area is considering holding the area track and field event in Smith’s Field on Friday June 7.

MONTHLY SOCIAL

The monthly social will take place in the Owenass Hall on Saturday April 27. Dancing from 9.30pm to 12.30am with music by Checkers. Refreshments served and admission €8.

TABLE QUIZ

There will be a table Quiz in Turley’s Pub on Saturday April 27 at 8pm. €5 per person, finger food and raffle on the night. This is being held by Sean Mangan who is raising funds to travel to Zambia for 8 weeks during the summer under the Niall Mellon Trust.

PTAA NEWS

Mountmellick PTAA has successfully qualified with their senior team for the All Ireland quiz final which will take place in Tuam Co Galway on Saturday April 27. Kingscourt, Castletown and Goresbridge also qualified for the final. A big thank you is extended to all who took part and helped with the Leinster quiz which was held in Mountmellick ICA hall on Sunday March 24. Congratulations is also extended to those involved in and attending the National Pioneer Ball which took place in Co Carlow on Saturday April 13. The night was a success and well done to all involved.

CUISLE CENTRE FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser will take place on Sunday May 5 from 3pm to 6pm in the Heritage Hotel Killenard in aid of the Cuisle Centre Cancer Support group. Country music by Guess Who. Free transport by Silver Dawn and Foster Coaches, departing the Square Mountmellick at 2pm. Coaches will leave the Heritage Hotel Killenard at 7pm. ARTIST’S TALK IN LIBRARY

On Friday May 3 at 2.15pm there will be a special talk by Wexford based artist Mary Wallace, whose exhibition ‘Abundance’ is currently on show in the art gallery. Mary will introduce her work which comprises a selection of mixed media paintings and weaving. Her media includes beeswax, wax encaustic and egg tempera. Her inspiration comes from nature, particularly Mediterranean fruit trees and their natural exotic beauty. All those who are interested in art can meet Mary, talk to her and gain some insight into her unique style and approach to art. Contact 057 8644572 if you wish to book a place for this free talk. ACTIVE RETIREMENT dates

April 24 at 10.30am: walking group, please wear high visibility jackets. May 1 at 10.30am: group meeting in the library where prize winning poet Jean O’Brien will read and the group will enjoy a coffee morning, at the invitation of Laois County Council and the library service. May 8 at 10.30am: walking group. May 15 at 10.30am: group meeting in MDA. Weekly activities are: Mondays Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Please come to practice on your team because there will be a Boccia Blitz in Portlaoise on Thursday April 18. Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon with the free bus leaving MDA at 11.15am. 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone. Please note there will be no dancing on Wednesday April 24 and May 1. Thursdays music & song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm and also art classes in MDA from 2pm to 4pm. Please note that the annual membership fee is now being collected. New members are always welcome.

Clonaghadoo Hall committee would like to thank everyone who supported their recent drama ‘Awake in the West’. They also like thank Joe O Connor and the Ashbourne players for their very entertaining performance and their help in raising much needed funds for our local hall.

LINE DANCING

Keep fit and have some fun line dancing in Conor Davis Park Clubhouse, Bay Road on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm. The cost is €6.

MOUNTMELLICK GAA

Adult training: Senior and Junior football is on Wednesday and Friday nights. Hurling training is on Saturday evenings.

MOUNTMELLICK JUVENILE GAA

Hurling training takes place in Acragar on Monday evenings at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30 pm for u8 and u10; 7.30pm to 8.30 pm for u12. All new players are welcome to attend. Training for u14 footballers is on Monday nights.

ROUNDERS

Children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes who are interested in playing rounders are invited to Mountmellick GAA Club on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12.30pm.

THE ROCK JUVENILE

Coaching for u8s and u10s on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. New players are always welcome and can register at training. For fixtures and matches please see sports section.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Kickboxing and Taekwondo classes for juniors, seniors and adults are held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Ladies classes are now also available. Professional gym with classes taught by a 4th degree National Champion. Contact 087 2768843.

PARISH PILGRIMAGES
