The Comhaltas AGM has been deferred to Tuesday October 2 at 9pm in the Conor Davis Park hall. All welcome. Classes for adults and children start from 6.30pm on Tues September 25. Our grupaí cheoil who took part in the All Ireland fleadh will play in the Dunamaise Theatre on Friday September 21 as part of Laois culture night. They will also play in Mountmellick library on the same day.

Classes will commence on Wednesday October 9 and Saturday October 12. Class schedules for all who have already completed and returned registration forms will be forwarded next week. Interest is high so places may be limited. Places will be assigned based on the date the completed registration form is returned. All are welcome. MIND & BODY BOOK THERAPY

Bernie Foran will give a talk on healthy reading for teens at your local library on Wednesday September 19 in Mountmellick library from 11am to noon. Booking is not needed for this free talk. Bernie will give details of the self help books stocked in Laois libraries that cover a range of everyday issues experienced by teenagers such as stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression and more.

HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY

This motivational talk by clinical psychologist Dr Eddie Murphy (as seen on RTE’s Operation Transformation) will explore the links between healthy minds and healthy bodies. It will be held in the community arts centre Mountmellick on Wednesday September 19 from 8pm to 9.30pm. Booking is not required for this free talk. Further information is available from 057 8671248.

PILGRIMAGE MASS

A reunion mass for the pilgrims that travelled to Lourdes and Medjugorje is being celebrated at 7.30pm on Wednesday September 19 in the primary school Davitt Road.

ALLOTMENT

BEAVERS SCOUTS

Beavers scouts will be starting up for their new year on Thursday September 20 from 7pm to 8pm in the Methodist hall. All are looking forward to a new year of activities.

CUB SCOUTS

Cub scouts are recommencing on Thursday September 20 in the Owenass Hall from 7pm to 8.30pm. New members (boys and girls) welcome to register on the night, must be 9 years of age and accompanied by an adult.
Cub scout leaders Maura Kenny, Edith Deffew and Mary Lalor-Fitzpatrick welcome Annette Dwyer who is joining the group for the new season.

BLOOD DONORS

The blood transfusion mobile clinic will be in Mountmellick on Thursday September 20 in St Patrick’s BNS from 4.30pm to 8pm. Your support would be appreciated.

SOCIAL

The monthly social dance takes place on Saturday September 28 in the Owenass hall with music by David Rea. Dancing from 9.30pm to 12.30am. All are welcome.

TABLE QUIZ

O’ Moore’s Camogie Club table quiz will take place on Friday September 21 in The Deadman’s Pub Ballyfin at 9pm. Tables of 4: adults €10, U18s €5. All welcome to attend.

SAMUEL BECKETT TALK

As part of culture of night Dr Arthur Broomfield will give a free talk on the works of Samuel Beckett on Friday September 21 from 3pm to 4.30pm in the Library. To book a place contact the Arts Office at 057 8674343. Dr Broomfield will explain how a fresh approach to Beckett’s works can reveal the excitement and humour that is often overlooked by readers and Beckett scholars.

MUSEUM

On culture night the museum will have a free late opening from 5pm to 8pm.

A parent and toddler group meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the Methodist church hall from 10am to noon. Children up to and including 4 years of age with their parent or guardian are most welcome. Follow us on Facebook at Mountmellick Parent & Toddler.

The above will meet every Wednesday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm in St Mary’s hall. All are welcome.

LIBRARY

The library hope to run two junior books clubs (ages 7 to 9 and 10 to 12) starting in September. Please give your name to a member of staff.

‘Titanic’ an exhibition of work by St Patrick’s NS opened in the gallery on Tuesday September 4.

Bookings are now being taken for an art demonstration by Antoinette Breen on Saturday September 22 from 11am to 1pm. Please phone the library to book a place.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION

The regular fortnightly club meetings will resume in MDA on Wednesday September 19 at 10.30am and new members are always welcome.

Boccia will be in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm every Monday in August. Aqua aerobics continues in Portlaoise Leisure Centre every Tuesday at noon with the free bus leaving the MDA at 11.15am.

Please note that the weekly music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital has been changed to Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.

LATE ANNETTE O’NEILL

There was much sadness at the untimely death of Annette O’Neill on Friday September 14 following an illness bravely borne. A cheerful and friendly person, a good neighbour and friend, Annette will be most sadly missed by all who knew her.

Remains reposed at her sister Dawn’s home in Silverbrook until removal on Sunday morning to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem mass was concelebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery.

The deepest sympathy of the community is extended to Annette’s son Thomas, her mother Kathleen, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their sad loss.
