LIONS CLUB CHARITY SHOW
Portarlington Lions Club are hosting their annual charity show on May 19 in the community centre. The show is called, The Truth and the lies of an Old Reprobate and is presented by Shay Flannery. The one man show is a selection of writings by the late Joe O’Neill and tells the story of Joe’s fair town of Mountmellick, his family and his own life, warts and all. There are stories from his childhood, anecdotes and reflections of life in a small town, and the brutal truth of living through alcoholism and its effects on himself, and his family. The Love Port Project in conjunction with Offaly Local Development Company are running a powerdown course through Cultivate Ireland. The aim of the course is to help educate communities on how to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and to help conserve energy. The course will run one night per week for 6 weeks commencing Thursday May 17 in Cloneygowan Community Centre. The Port Community Men’s Shed kicks off on Thursday afternoon, May 17 from 4pm at the ALERT warehouse in Botley Lane Industrial Estate. All the men of Portarlington are welcome to come along and get involved in planning their Community Men’s Shed.
A meeting will be held on Thursday May 31 to work on garden planning. Port allotments have donated a bit of land for GIY to work with and our first task is to plan what to do. We will be working on garden design as well as focusing on the GIY space. The Family GIY is due to be the following Saturday which is a bank holiday so we will have the family GIY on Saturday June 9. We also hope to be working at the allotments on that day bringing our designs to life.
DIRTY OLD TOWNS
Well done to Portarlington and all the work that was done for the programme. It was a busy 5 months, but brought all the community together. Last Wednesday May 9 was the last night of the programme. Praises have come in from near and far. The DOT committee would like to say that work will continue, and they will be working along with Ports Tidy towns committee.
This week is National Volunteering week. Why not give even half an hour to making your community and area a nicer place to live in. All you have to do is a tidy outside where you live.

St Michaels AC seniors recorded three wins in one week recently starting with a win for Elaine Mullally who was 1st master woman in the Dochas 4 mile road race in Tullamore on Sunday May 6. John White won the senior men’s 400m event at the St Abbans open sports on Monday May 7, and John Fenlon won the Durrow 6k on Wednesday night May 9. Last in an impressive time of 20mins. Great running by all. Training continues at 7pm every Tuesday in Emo Court and 7pm every Thursday in McCann Park. New members always welcome.
Well done to all the junior and senior swimmers who took part in the Community Games swimming on Saturday May 12 in Portarlington Leisure Centre. It was a great success and enjoyed by all. Some great swimming was witnessed in the races.

Port’s junior GAA league match against Ballyroan was called off on Saturday May 12 as a mark of respect for Alex Ennis who plays on the junior team. Sadly Alexs Mam passed away last week. The club would like to pass on their deepest sympathies, and our thoughts and prayers are with Alex and his family at this tough time.

Much sympathy is extended to the family of Mal Keogh, St Michael’s Park and formerly of St Patrick’s Tce Portarlington who passed away last week after a long illness. To her partner Pat, her sons Trevor and Alex, her daughter Avril, her brothers and sister, and her extended family and friends we send deepest sympathy from the people of Port. Mal managed the Hospice charity shop for many years in the town, and was known for her thoughtfulness and generosity to everyone she came in contact with. Mal was laid to rest in St Michael’s Cemetery after requiem mass on Sunday May 13. May she rest in peace.
It was with sadness that the town heard of the death of Dolores (Loney) Shortall, (née Doyle) of 30 Arlington Estate, Portarlington on Thursday May 10. Loney is survived by her husband Seamie, her brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and her extended family, neighbours and many friends.
Removal took place from Maher’s Chapel of Rest to St Michael’s Church on Saturday May 12. Requiem mass took place on Sunday 13 with burial afterwards in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Loney rest in peace.

Congrats to Oisin Hoey on his recent athletics titles. Oisin won the Leinster Masters Championships for the 56LB for distance and the Shot Putt as well as the Irish Masters Championship for the 56lb for distance event. Seodhna Hoey also won the Leinster Indoor Championship for the U/15 Shot Putt, the Carlow open sports U/15 Shot Putt competition. She has also won the Laois Secondary Schools and Laois Championship titles in this event as well as placing second in the South Leinster schools championships in both Shot Putt and Discus. On May 7 Seodhna won both Shot and Discus at St.Abbans open sports with personal best performances in each discipline. Sean O’Callaghan Hoey won the Irish Open Takwando title for full contact sparring and placed 3rd in the Takwando patterns event. Sean also lifted the title of the southern centre Leinster off the road motor cycle championship with two championship wins and three 2nd place finishes. Well done once again to the very talented Hoey family, from all in Portarlington.
