Arthritis Talk

Laois Arthritis are pleased to present a talk in the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise on Wed, February 10 at 7.30pm sharp. Topic "Self Care Strategies for Wellbeing" by speaker Finola Colgan, Area Development Officer, Mental Health Ireland. During this presentation, Finola will provide an explanation as to why mental fitness is important and provide tips for implementation. All welcome. Educate Together

The Educate Together non-denominational school patronage body is to host a public information meeting on Monday, February 15 to discuss the the plan for a new secondary school in Portlaoise. The Educate Together movement intend applying to be patron of the school. All interested parents are welcome to the meeting in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. Cemetery AGM

A busy year was reviewed at the well-attended Portlaoise Cemetery Committee annual general meeting in Kavanagh’s tavern last Tuesday night (Feb 2). Chairperson Kathleen O’Brien noted that people had commented very favourably on the amount of work that had been done in SS Peter and Paul’s cemetery in the previous 12 months—and she thanked them for their encouragement and financial support.

Treasurer Jim Tuohy reported on a successful fiscal year and revealed that the committee had spent almost € 3,000 on improvements to the cemetery in 2015.

The committee’s annual church gate collection will take place in March. All contributions welcome.

Solemn Novena To Our Lady of Perpetual Help runs from Saturday February 13 to - Sunday February 21. The nine consecutive day Novena at SS Peter & Paul's is celebrated to give thanks to God for his compassion and mercy. This Year of Mercy you are invited to partake in this wonderful celebration. Everyday, during our Novena, different themes will reflect on the joys and the struggles of life. “Petitions” Personal Prayers will be presented by all who commit for One of these Novena Masses for the Nine Days Feb 13-21. Guest speakers and Priests will lead the various Masses.

Macra Theatre

Portlaoise Macra in conjunction with the Dunamaise Theatre are hosting a comedy night in the Theatre with the production of Charolais. A great night of entertainment with a pre-show drinks promotion and raffle on the night.The show will take place in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Tuesday the 1st of March at 8pm. St Patrick's Parade

The Portlaoise parade will go ahead this year as more volunteers have got involved to help with the organisation. The committee will continue to meet on Monday nights in The Welcome Inn at 8pm for anyone who wishes to get involved.

The Heath Hall and Cemetery Committee are holding a Social to celebrate the Centenary of the Church Hall on March 17.

Toastmaster Mary Heaney welcomed us everyone and encouraged us with her theme for the night "success is not being afraid to fail". She presented examples like the Beatles, Einstein and Walt Disney who were considered failures in their early lives and look where they are now!

An amazing Icebreaker speech, about her love of talking, was given with great confidence by Niamh Cahill. Niamh displayed great composure in her emotional and inspirational speech. Balazs Kerestury discussed the similarities between his native Hungary and Ireland, comparing culture, history and he demonstrated an imaginative use of maps to illustrate similarities. An advanced PowerPoint presentation lived up to expectations in the capable hands of Bryan Holland, the club’s IT expert. He hosted the presentation and then dealt with questions from the floor with panache.

A very lively Table Topics session presided over by new member Sean Murphy. Members asked to tell tall tales or the truth and the audience quizzed them to determine if the member told a tall tail or the truth. Members claimed to be punted on the Thames, on TV or another backing JedWard on the Late Late! Do you believe it?

Sean Murphy was awarded the Geraldine O'Loughlin Award at the end of the night for his whole hearted involvement in the club

Art competition

Teachers in primary and secondary schools, whose pupils take part in the annual Texaco Children’s Art Competition, are reminded that the closing date for entries is Monday, Feb 29. Last year 121 pupils from schools in Laois entered.

The Irish Youth Music Awards (IYMA) regional competition for 12 to 19 year olds takes place on Thursday 18 February at the Portlaoise Youth Cafe at 7pm. Day of the Sick

To mark World Day of the Sick on February 11, the Sacrament of the Sick with individual anointing will be celebrated at 10am mass in SS Peter & Paul's Church. Led by Bishop Denis Nulty who will also launch the first diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes from July 16.


Trocáire lenten collection boxes are available in the church porches or in the Parish Centre.

Condolences to the family of the late Adaobi Iro, Castle Way, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, who died on February 2. Loving wife of Christopher. She is deeply loved by her husband and two childen. Reposed at her residence. Removal to SS Peter and Paul's Church, Portlaoise for Requiem Mass. Cremation will follow in Newlands Crematorium.
