The Doyle Family Support Fund is holding a benefit night on Friday, July 15 in Kavanagh's pub Portlaoise. The event aims to raise funds for the wife and family of the late Christopher Doyle of Portlaoise. Michelle is left with seven children under the age of 8. She now needs a 9 seater car. In order to help, some local parents have organised the fundraiser.

Portlaoise Tidy Towns welcomes any person who is willing to give an hour a week enhancing the town. Meet at Market Square at 7pm each Monday evening for itter picking, painting and other jobs. Come along and give it a go.
Children up to 12 years are now invited to take up Laois County Library Service’ annual Summer Stars Reading Challenge, of reading six or more library books over summer, with fun rewards and a certificate presented by children’s author Patricia Forde if they succeed.

Foróige’s Big Brother Big Sister programme is looking for adult volunteers (18+) to be a mentor to a young person aged between 10 and 18 in the Portlaoise area, to support and befriend them and help them reach their potential. Volunteers spend 1 to 2 hours a week on fun activities, and would need to commit to a year's work. Training provided.

Church gate collection for the registered Mental Health Charity GROW takes place on July 16/17. Volunteers needed for the collection contact John on 0868033126. The group holds support meetings in Portlaoise Parish Centre on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
Comhaltas Seisiún is a concert style presentation of traditional music available at three venues in Laois on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays during July and August. The Seisiún programme runs for seven weeks and features singers, musicians and dancers of all ages. Portlaoise Seisiún 8.30pm on Tuesdays at Kavanagh's, Main St, where the Courtyard setting combines an outdoor feel with the comfort of a covered, heated concertvenue.
The shows also provide a cultural experience for visitors. There are also seisún in Camross and Spink.

As part of the 1916 Commemoration, Laois Libraries will be hosting an exhibition on the 1916 Rising. The exhibition has been researched and developed by library staff and provides an excellent resource and reference for anyone who is interested in 1916 and what happened locally in the county . The exhibition is currently on display in Portlaoise Library and will travel to all library branches in Laois over the coming months.
