Public meeting

A public meeting takes place next Tuesday, August 30 6pm-9pm at The Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise to gather local views on the preparation of a Public Realm strategy for Portlaoise. A project team of planners, architects, urban designers etc has been gathered by Laois County Concil to prepare a plan for the future of the town centre. The Project Team and Laois County Council invites the public to the information session and workshop on the night. The council's chief executive John Mullholland will set out the purpose of the strategy at the outset before an hour long round table event. All are welcome to help the team and council draw up the plan.

Youth Theatre

Laois Youth Theatre open day on Saturday, September 10 11am to 12.30pm in the Dunamaise Arts Centre -all welcome to come along (ages 12-18) to see what happens at the regular workshops. Fee for the year is €100 and this can be paid in full or in two installments of €50, payable on the first day of term. Call now to book your place. Mens Sheds AGM

Portlaoise Mens Sheds AGM takes place in the Portlaoise Equestrian Centre on the Timahoe Rd on Tuesday, August 23 at 7pm. All welcome including new members. Activities: music, Wednesdays 8pm, Thursdays - gardening and woodwork 3-5pm. For info call Michael 086-3767530


New weekly meetings on Fridays of Friends of Cuan Mhuire take place in Portlaoise at the Sue Ryder Centre Kilminchy on Fridays form 7.30pm-9pm.

Doyle family fund

On Saturday the 17th of September, Bagatelle will play in Portlaoise Heritage Hotel as part of the fundraising efforts in aid of the Doyle Family in Portlaoise. Doors will open at 8.30am and tickets €25 available to buy now from reception in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. It promises to be a great night with amazing music and entertainment, fab raffle prizes all while supporting a very worthy local cause. On the 1Oth of June, 37 year old Christopher Doyle passed away suddenly leaving his wife to care for their seven children. A group of local parents have come together aiming to raise enough money to buy a9-seatercar that can easily accommodate the Doyle family.

Tidy Towns

Portlaoise Tidy Towns welcomes any person who is willing to give an hour a week to enhancing the town. Meet at Market Square at 7pm each Monday evening for litter picking, painting and other jobs.

Come along and give it a go.

Music school

Laois School of Music and Music Generation Laois joint open evening takes place on Wednesday, September 7 from 6pm to 8pm at the Portlaoise Youth Education Centre, Railway St, Portlaoise. All welcome.

Path fundraiser

Portlaoise Action to Homelessness is holding its annual Croghan Hill 5km challenge on Saturday, September 28. Bus to Croghan in Offaly. Goodie bag on bus with t-shirt and treats. Challenge starts at 10am. Bus back to town at approximately 1.30pm.

BBQ and Entertainment in Kavanagh's pub in Portlaoise. Only children 12 and over are permitted to do the course with a pre signed consent form. The event raises much needed funds to help our homeless on the streets.

Peoples Park

Páirc an Phobail/Peoples Park Portlaoise is one of 22 parks across the country to have been awarded a new Green Flag for Parks and Open Spaces. The revamped park, which was formally opened late last year, now includes a woodland walk, outdoor classroom, adult gym equipment, and walking trails and children's playground. The public is invited to come along and enjoy the facility.

Blessing of bags

Blessing of school bags will take place at 6.30pm Mass on Saturday, September 3.


Comhaltas Seisiún is a concert style presentation of traditional music available at three venues in Laois on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays during July and August. The Seisiún programme runs for seven weeks and features singers, musicians and dancers of all ages. Portlaoise Seisiún 8.30pm on Tuesdays at Kavanagh's, Main St, where the Courtyard setting combines an outdoor feel with the comfort of a covered, heated concertvenue.

The shows also provide a cultural experience for visitors.


The Aware Support Group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and other mood related conditions meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in St.Peter and Pauls Parish Centre, Portlaoise. Heritage Week 1916: A Centenary on Screen on Saturday, 27th August at 8pm at the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise.

The Irish Film Institute present a wonderful evening of short films, live-action and animation, re-mastered newsreels and live music inspired by the Rising, its aftermath and influence. Live musical accompaniment by harpist Cormac de Barra. Presented as part of IFI 1916 – 2016 Centenary Film Programme, supported by Laois County Council and the Ireland 2016 Fund.

Lions Club Event

Abbeyleix and District Lions Club & Portlaoise Lions Club are delighted to announce that Abbeyleix Estate Gardens & Arboretum will be open during Heritage Week to the public on Sunday, August 28 from 2pm – 5pm. By kind permission of Sir David Davies. Abbeyleix “Old Church” and Graveyard will also be open by kind permission of Viscount de Vesci. A Guided Tour will take place at 3pm.Meet at the Courtyard.
