AN AMBITIOUS project is underway in Portlaoise which it his hoped will see every estate working together to improve community spirit, tackle crime and other issues.
In early March it is hoped that residents will take part in the first public meeting of the as yet unamed community networking project. The scheme has the supported of Laois County Council and the Gardai.
Community Garda Sergeant Justine O’Reilly is spearheading the initiative with Georghina Ireland in County Hall.
Sgt O’Reilly initiative’s aim is to encourage cross community solutions to issues in estates by the sharing of ideas. She said the meeting could also look at improving estate managment and community spirit.
“The first meeting is scheduled for the first week of Marcy for every estate in Portlaoise. Letters will be sent out to representatives in each estate,” she said.
She said the council and the gardai are collecting details to ensure all estates are represented.
Sgt Reilly said residents associations and estates not registered can contact Ms Ireland at the community policing unit at Portlaoise Garda Station. The idea for the project came about at a Laois Community Forum meeting held last year.
