A parent and toddler group meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the Methodist church hall from 10am to noon. This will start on Tuesday September 11.

Mountmellick parish welcomes Fr Mícheál Murphy this week in his new appointment as parish priest. We hope he will enjoy getting to know the people and the parish.

We thank Fr Eddie Kavanagh for all his kindness during his ministry here and wish him all the best in his new parish in Allen, Kildare.

Fr Francis MacNamara retires as PP but happily will be remaining here in Mountmellick to continue his ministry.


This fundraiser for St Mary’s Hall will be held in Kilcavan on Friday September 7. Registration is from 6pm with an entry fee of €10. The race starts at 7pm. Refreshments served in St Mary’s Hall.


Midlands Photography Group presents David Noton for one night only on Tuesday September 11 at the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise at 8pm.

A limited number of tickets are still available costing €20 and can be purchased by contacting or by making contact with any of the clubs within Midlands Photography Group. The group is a combination of Mountmellick, Athy, Carlow, South Kildare and Slieve Bloom photography clubs.

David Noton is an award winning landscape and travel photographer with over 26 years’ experience as a professional. During his photographic career David has travelled widely. David’s pictures are published all over the world and he writes for a broad range of media including photographic magazines and websites. David’s work can be viewed at

The board game club for ages 10 to 12 will meet on Thursday September 13 from 4pm to 5pm. New members welcome.

The Storylab summer reading challenge will finish on Friday September 14. Anyone who completes the challenge will receive a gold medal at an award ceremony at the end of September. So if you haven’t finished, you’ve still got time.

Boccia will be in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm every Monday in August. Aqua aerobics continues in Portlaoise Leisure Centre every Tuesday at noon with the free bus leaving the MDA at 11.15am.

Please note that the weekly music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital has been changed to Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm.

There was widespread sadness at the death of Christy Ging of Irishtown and formerly of New Road Portlaoise on Tuesday August 28 at St James’ Hospital. Christy was held in high regard by all who knew him and he will be sadly missed.

Remains reposed at Moloney’s Funeral Home until removal to St Joseph’s Church on Thursday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated on Friday at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery.

The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Christy’s wife Laurenta, daughters Claire and Emer, sisters, brothers, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.
