Folk Choir

Portarlington Folk Choir would like to thank everyone who contributed to their recent church gate collection. The choir welcomes new members at all times. Choir sing at 12.15pm mass every fortnight. Alarms for the Elderly

Portarlington Lions Club in conjunction with Portarlington Community Development Association are hosting an information evening on emergency panic buttons/bogus caller buttons/ fall detectors etc. These buttons are for personal use when someone needs assistance and are monitored 24 hours a day. Grants are automatically available for anyone over 65 within the defined catchment area of Portarlington. The evening will have a presentation on:

1. How the panic buttons operate. 2. What they are used for. 3. The grants that are available. 4. How to apply for the grants. This open event will take place in the Candied Walnut, Killnacourt on Tuesday April 9 at 7.30pm. All are Welcome.

Port Awards 2013

Congratulations to the organisers of the Portarlington Awards which took place on Friday March 22 in the Heritage Hotel Killenard. Well done to all community groups and individuals who were honoured for their work in the community on the night.

Fundraiser

Local girl Rachel Slevin has been chosen to represent Ireland in an international open karate competition in Scotland this April. Rachel is almost 9yrs of age and from Portarlington. She along with 19 other students from around Ireland will be competing in this event. 
Please come along to the community centre on April 12 from 11am to 1pm to support this fundraising event to get our little local champion there.
It is hoped to have a huge range of goodies, and of course tea and coffee for all who attend but then there will be an option of buying some extras to bring home afterwards. We will also be supporting the National Learning Network, with contributions from the event supporting this wonderful charity too.

Tennis Coaching

Tennis coaching with Tony Lok will resumes on Tuesday April 16 and Friday April 19. All levels and ages are catered for. Places for coaching are limited so If interested ring Nuala 087 1231135. New members welcome.

At our recent AGM it was decided to hold our annual court clean up on Saturday April 13 from 2pm to 6pm. Members are asked, if available to give one hour to clean up the courts, weather permitting. Line Dancing

Keep fit and have some fun with line dancing in Conor Davis Park Clubhouse, Bay Road, Mountmellick beginning on Wednesday April 3 from 7.30pm to 9pm. The cost is €6. Why not come along and have some fun.

COURTWOOD GAA

Training for all adult players continues under manager John Joe O’Connell. Normal training nights are Tuesdays and Fridays at 8pm, but make sure to check out our Facebook page for confirmed training times/dates and all other club news.

Many thanks to all who supported our recent Easter draw. Kettlebells sessions continue at 8.30pm on Thursday nights in Rath Community Centre and all are welcome (male or female, players or non players).

Make sure to tune in to Midlands 103 tonight (Tuesday) between 7 and 8pm to hear Courtwood take on Erin Rovers in the station’s new GAA quiz.

Kitchen Gardening

Former Minister for Horticulture, Trevor Sargent will give a talk, PowerPoint presentation and question time on ‘Kitchen Gardening, Growing More and Importing Less’ on Wednesday April 17 in St Paul’s Church, The Square, Portarlington at 8pm. Admission €5 at the door. Please support this interesting event in aid of church renovation funds. Raffle and light refreshments afterwards.

Port Drama Society

Portarlington drama society continue to meet up stairs in the Anvil Inn, Main Street on Monday and Thursday nights from 8 - 10pm. We are still raising funds to cover our set and venue rental and are holding a table quiz in the Anvil Inn on Friday April 5. Table of 4 is €20. Please come along and support us.

Tag Rugby

Portarlington have two Tag Rugby teams going forward to the Leinster semi finals in Longford on Sunday April 7. These are U11 and U14. Some old faces from the last few years, but also lots of new faces on the U11 team. Best of luck to both teams in Longford.

LATE TOM FENNELLY

The death has occurred of Tom Fennelly of Tinnakill Portarlington, Laois. Peacefully at home in his 90th year. Reposing at his residence Monday from 4pm, with Rosary at 9pm. Removal on Tuesday at 5.50pm arriving St Paul’s Church Emo at 6.30pm. Requiem mass on Wednesday at 12 noon. Funeral afterwards to the new cemetery Emo. Donations if desired to the Irish Cancer Society.

Youth Club

Portarlington Youth Club has been established for over 7 years now and is run from the Catholic Club, Main Street, Portarlington. This is an all inclusive club for 12 – 18 year olds which runs from September to May each year. The club is on every Wednesday from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. The club is run by its members and has organised activities such as cookery, DVD nights, sports nights, arts and crafts, self defence, first aid, guitar lessons. If you know a young person who would be interested in meeting new friends, learning new skills or simply just enjoy hanging out then this club may be for them. Simply drop down any Wednesday night for a look around or contact us on portarlingtonyouthclub@yahoo.co.uk.

The youth club are always looking for volunteers so if you are over the age of 18, interested in meeting new friends and would like to give something back to the community then please give us a call on 087 9852680.

Table Quiz

Kestrels Basketball Club table quiz takes place on Thursday April 4 at 8pm in The Thatch Bar Killenard. Tickets are €10 each. €40 per table. Raffle on the night.
