RACE NIGHT

Mountmellick Soccer Club is holding their deferred race night on Friday June 21 in Moloney’s Gaelic Bar. Horses (€20) can be bought from any of our committee or by contacting Michael Davis on 087 6178821.

ROAD RACE

The Rock GAA Club in conjunction with Ballyfin AC is holding a 5 mile road race and 2 mile walk on Sunday June 23 at 11am with registration from 10am. Parking, changing rooms, shower facilities and post race refreshments will be available. Fully AAI permit approved and measured. Prizes will be given for 1st 2nd and 3rd men and women and there will be spot prizes in the clubhouse afterwards. Race Entry fee: adults €15, u18s €10. Two mile walk entry fee: adults €10, u18s €5, children u12 Free. CEREMONY

The Barrow Rise Pastoral Area (Clonaslee, Killeigh, Mountmellick and Rosenallis parishes) are celebrating an ecumenical ceremony of prayer on Sunday June 23 at 7pm. The following is the outline of the ceremony: assembly on Killeigh village green, introduction to historical religious sites in the four parishes, prayer and reflection, introduction to the cloister of the old monastery, scripture and prayer at the Church of Ireland and a walk to St Patrick’s Church where there will be Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome. Parking will be available in the Catholic Church grounds.

KNITTING

The knitting club meets on Tuesday mornings in the library from 10.30am to noon. Come along for a chat and a cuppa. New members are welcome.

HOSPICE

The High Nelly cycle challenge for Laois Hospice will arrive in Mountmellick at lunchtime on day 2 of their cycle round Laois on Thursday June 13. All are welcome along to meet them and enjoy some music and song at The Coffee Pot at the shopping centre. They will continue on to Camross after lunch. Anyone wishing to cycle should contact Liam Ashe 085 1409132.

CENTENARY

St Mary’s Hall Clonaghadoo formally Clonaghadoo School (1912-1973) is celebrating its centenary on Sunday June 16 at 2pm in Clonaghadoo Hall. All past pupils are invited to join in this wonderful celebration.

ACTIVE RETIRED

Wednesday June 12: group meeting in MDA. Wednesday June 19 at 10.30am: walking group. Wednesday June 26: group meeting in MDA. Weekly activities in June: Mondays, Boccia in the Macra hall. Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon, with the free bus leaving MDA at 11.15am. Thursday’s music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm. Dancing and art classes have stopped for summertime. New members are welcome to join the club at any time throughout the year.

RIP

There was much regret at the death of Con Cunningham of Derryguile on Wednesday May 29 in Alicante, Spain. Remains reposed at his home on Wednesday June 5 until removal to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 11am on Thursday with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Con will be most fondly remembered by all who knew him. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Con’s sister Lily (Peake), his brothers Fr PJ and Larry, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.

WALK

Youth Advocate Programmes (YAP) Ireland is holding a fundraising walk at Glenbarrow on Friday June 21. There will be 2 routes, a 2 mile or 4 mile, entry cost €10 (t-shirt included), family €15. SUNFLOWER DAY

Laois Hospice Foundation is seeking volunteers to collect on National Sunflower Day on Friday June 14. Would you have an hour to space on that day that you could give to Laois Hospice Foundation to sell sunflowers at various outlets. This is one of the main fundraisers organised by Laois Hospice Foundation and all monies collected locally are spent on hospice services in Laois. There is an urgent need for volunteers to sell sunflowers and if you have an hour to spare on Friday June 14 please contact Mary Delaney at 086 8157280.
