FOUNDATION OF MOUNTMELLICK

Contrary to popular belief, Mountmellick was not founded by the Quakers.

Mountmellick was officially created on February 12 1631, almost 30 years before William Edmundson, the Father of Quakerism in Ireland, arrived in Mountmellick.

FAMINE TOUR

Mountmellick Heritage Society has organised a ‘Famine Tour’ on Thursday August 22.  The bus will leave O’Connell Square at 9am and return mid-afternoon, visiting heritage and famine sites including a tour of the site of the former workhouse in Mountmellick.  Cost: €7 per person includes entry to Donaghmore Workhouse and Famine Museum.  The cost is subsidised by Mountmellick Heritage Society.

These will begin in September at MDA and funding may be available if you are unemployed.

ART CLASSES

Classes for adults and children at Kilbride art group will resume in the first week of September and continue until December.

EXHIBITION

Jane W Shackleton’s photographic exhibition titled ‘Ireland’ continues until Saturday August 31 in the library gallery.

This includes photographs of Mountmellick and Rosenallis.

READING CHALLENGE

The children’s summer reading challenge will run until the end of August.

Drop into the library to sign up and collect your Creepy House card.

finding your BRITISH ARMY ancestors   

A free talk by author Neil Richardson on researching your relatives who served in the British Army during World War 1 will be given in the library on Tuesday August 20 at 6.15pm.

THE MARINE EXPERIENCE

A free interactive marine workshop that introduces all age groups to the wonders of Ireland’s marine world takes place in the library on Wednesday August 21 at 11am. This will feature a touchpool containing live sea creatures and an interactive display with sea shells and underwater images.

WW1 RESEARCH

The World War 1 research committee is holding a public information meeting in the Balcony Theatre (Arts Centre) on Thursday August 22 at 8pm.

The committee is hoping to find out how many from the town served in WW1 and in what units and how many lost their lives.

They will share their findings at the meeting and hope anyone with information on their relatives will come along and share also.

ADULT BOOK CLUB

Interested in joining a book club?

The library book club will resume in September.

The club will meet in the library on the first Tuesday of each month from 11am to 12pm.

SOCIAL DANCE

Social dancing takes place in Clonaghadoo Hall on Thursday August 22 at 9 pm with music by Ruben James.

Admission is €5.

Refreshments will be served.

KILCAVAN RUN/WALK

Clonaghadoo hall committee are having their annual Kilcavan 5K run/walk on Friday September 6 at 7pm.

Registration at Clonaghadoo Church from 6pm. Adults €10, juveniles €5.

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd male and female and also many more prizes on the night.

Refreshments served afterwards.

ACTIVE RETIRED

The group meetings will resume on Wednesday September 4.

Weekly activities: Mondays, Boccia in the Macra hall.

Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon.

The free bus will be leaving MDA at 11.15am.

Thursday’s music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm.

THE ROCK GATHERING

This community based social event will take place on Saturday October 26 with all welcome to attend.

St. Joseph’s Cemetery committee thank Mountmellick GAA, Mountmellick Civil Defence, Martin Lawlor, Donie Williams, P J Kearns and all those who helped out at our annual cemetery mass. We also thank all who supported our collection your

THE ROCK GAA

The recent fun day was a tremendous success with a large crowd enjoying the activities and attractions. The club thanks Mountmellick Baton Twirlers, Laois Martial Arts, Limetree Flying Club (Gerry Deegan), The Pet Store (Hugh Mullen) and all club supporters and members.
