Well done to the Portlaoise team who won the county round of the bowling competition on Friday night. The National Macra Rally takes place this weekend in Carlow where Portlaoise will compete in the Know Your Ag Final. Farm walks and a conference on CAP on the Saturday. The enrolment deadline for the school year 2014/15 is Monday, November 11. To enrol your child in junior infants, please have your enrolment form with the school by this date. The great demand for places means late applications will not be accepted. Registration forms with enrolment policy from the school office.


November events at the Parish Centre each day from 3-5pm. Wed 6 - fun day with frog racing. The group are also starting a Festive Carols Choir and there is a practice each Wednesday from 4.45pm to 5.45pm in the Parish Centre. We do need volunteers. All proceeds will go to charity; Wed 13 - We expect to have something new at our activities day followed by choir practice; Wed 20 - Maureen Culliton leads us off as usual with a great day of dancing. Also choir practice for charity to follow dancing. Wed 27 - special ladies fashion show with carols singing practice afterwards. Indoor bowls every Monday from 2.30-4.40pm at St Mary’s Hall. The Team Hope completed shoeboxes can be dropped off in Portlaoise at Axa, the Parish Centre, Tesco, and TK Maxx. The closing date for this year’s appeal is Monday, November 11. Cuisle Gala ball

Charity gala ball for The Cuisle Centre on Saturday, November 16 in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel. Pre-dinner drinks 7-8pm. Special guest is Jo Jordan (Dublin Housewives). Music by the Keith McDonald Showband. Tickets €50 from the Cuisle Centre or Janet Stewart 086 2737146.

Town’s Wildlife

The Laois branch of BirdWatch Ireland meet on Tuesday, October 29 when Michael Brennan will talk about ‘Wildlife around Portlaoise’ at the Portlaoise Parish Centre at 8pm. Change of regular meeting night to the last Tuesday of the month. On Sunday, November 3, join Michael to take a look at the town’s wildlife firsthand. Meet in the People’s Park at 9.30am.

Community Games

AGM for The Heath Community Games on Tuesday 5 November at 8.30pm in the hall beside The Heath Church.

As there are major adjustments to the activities calendar for 2014 it is vital for at least one parent from each family who wish to compete next year to attend the AGM.

Laois community forum Awards

Application forms for the 2013 Laois Community Forum Awards are now available​. Entry deadline extended to Thursday, November 7​ before 5pm. There are five ​c​ategories in the ​g​roup/​c​lubs section while there is also an Unsung Hero Award.


All members of Portlaoise and district gun club are bound by the club rules and the clubs specified shooting days during the season. The shooting days permitted under club rules for the coming season are November 1st and 2nd and Saturdays and Sundays there after until January 30. No shooting during the week.

Alzheimers Society

Homebase Portlaoise is hosting a karaoke night in aid of Laois Alzheimers Society in Delaney’s pub on Halloween night from 9pm. Adm €5.


Now open at Portlaoise Equestrian Centre, Tuesday 11am - 4pm and 7.30pm - 10pm, Thursday 11am - 4pm.


Portlaoise hosts the area 40 final on November 7 at the Killeshin Hotel from 8pm.

Parish Lotto

No winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when numbers were drawn on October 24. Numbers 4,21,23,29. The 7 match winners won €143 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Condolences to the family of the late Shane Moore of Rossvale, Portlaoise, who died on Saturday, October 19. Very deeply regretted by his heartbroken parents Pat and Lily and sister Marian, granny, uncles, aunts, cousins, relatives and numerous friends. Reposed at his residence from 2pm on Tuesday, with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Late William Houlihan

The death and burial of William (Billy) Houlihan late of 43 St Johns square Portlaoise has taken place in England. RIP
