Nursing homes scheme at ‘crisis’

Noting the lack of funds for the Nursing Home Fair Deal Scheme, she wondered what were patients to do. Were they to take up beds in acute hospitals? she wondered.

This, she said, was happening following the closure of a 25-bed ward in St Vincent’s Hospital, Mountmellick, and, she alleged, it seemed they were trying to close Shaen Hospital as well. She added: “It’s a crisis point, really.”

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald: “I think the uncertainty is worse.”

Adopted unanimously was Cllr O’Brien’s proposal that they should seek clarity from Health Minister James Reilly on the Nursing Home Fair Deal Scheme--regarding
