Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Lar (Sonny) Hyland of Station Road who died in Oakdale Nursing Home on Thursday May 24. Lar leaves behind his loving wife Mary, his son Ger and Daughter Joan. His extended family and many friends. Requiem Mass took place at St. Michael’s Church on Sunday, May 27, with burial after in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

COMMUNION

Congratulations to all the beautiful little girls who made their 1st Holy communion last Saturday in St. Michael’s Church. They all looked like little Princesses.

Well done to their parents, their teachers from Presentation School, and their Headmistress Margaret Walsh for bringing them to this day.

To Fr Byrne and Fr Dooley for the wonderful Ceremony. Also big thanks to the parents Council who put on such great Refreshments in the school after the Church.

PORT TIDY TOWNS

Now that the dust has settled after the Dirty Old Towns Programme it is up to us all to make sure that Portarlington looks its very best for the summer months. Judging in the National Tidy Towns Competition starts from 1st June. The Tidy Towns started their weekly work nights on Monday last May 28 at 7.30pm, they will be planting, weeding, litter picking etc.

COLAISTE IOSAGAIN 5K RUN

  What a spectacular sight in Portarlington to see the boys & girls from Colaiste Iosagain doing 5k fun run on Friday last May 25.  Proceeds are going towards the Lisa Bracken Fund, who was a former student in the school. Hoping Lisa is doing well after her operation last Tuesday 22. Sending best wishes from the town to Lisa.

SCRAP SATURDAY

Portarlington Community Development Association are running a “SCRAP SATURDAY” on Saturday June 9 from 12pm-6pm in the Square Portarlington.

Clean up your home or farmyard. Bring your unwanted scrap metal, farm machinery, batteries, electrical goods etc. Dispose of it for free!!!

Doing so will help LOVE PORT raise funds.  Household items include: biscuit tins, oil tanks, coal buckets, saucepans, steel windows frames, kettles, boilers, cookers, steel gutters, gas heaters, bicycles, washing machines, golf irons, sink tops, copper, food mixers, brass, electrical cable, go karts, trampolines, fencing wire, swing frames, goal posts, clothes irons, radiators, old cars, engine parts, gates, wheel barrows, trailers, tractors, diggers, water pumps, batteries, barrels. COFFEE MORNING

Portarlington Parents & Friends of Moore Abbey are holding a Coffee morning on Friday June 15 at 10.30am in the Community Centre. Raffle on the morning. Outing to Limerick on Wednesday, July 11. Further details later.

BLACKHALL BRIDGE

A meeting of the local residents interested in the upkeep of the Blackhall Bridge amenity area will be held in the Portarlington Community Centre on Wednesday May 30 at 8pm.

GIY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the GIY will take place in the French Quarter Cafe, French Church Street on Thursday May 31 from 19.30pm to 21.00pm. We will be discussing best practice for Garden planning, with some great tips and advice.

We will also work on plans for the plot of land at the allotments site. Some of us may even take a site visit on the night to get a good picture of what we have to play with.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

Well done to the boys from St. Patrick’s Boys N.S who presented the Wizard of Oz in Portarlington GAA Centre on Thursday and Friday May 24 and 25. The boys gave a wonderful performance both nights.

MOORE ABBEY

Portarlington Parents and friends of Moore Abbey will be holding a coffee morning on Friday, June 15 at 10.30 am in the community centre. All are welcome and your support is grately appreciated.

Many thanks to all those who supported our recent Cake Sale in aid of the upcoming Féile competition and to all those who supplied cakes etc. on the day.

St. Conleths wil be hosting the girls from the Kilmurry-Ilbricken club in Clare for the weekend of the Féile competition.

We would like to welcome all the girls, club officials and parents from the club and look forward to having a very enjoyable weekend together.

EXAMS

The club wishes the best of luck to all our girls who will be starting their exams next week.
