Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Mairead Corbett (Nee Walsh) no 1 Foxcroft St Portarlington, and formerly of Carrick, Castlejordan Edenderry. Mairead passed away on Saturday May 12 in the loving care of Lourdesville Nursing Home Kildare. Mairead was predeceased by her husband John. Requiem mass took place in St Michael’s Church with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery.

Predeceased by his parents, his brothers Pat and Thomas and sister Breda. To his daughters Alice and Agnes and their mother Anne we send our sincere sympathy. Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Denis Ward of Eden House, Portlaoise Rd, Portarlington and late of 6, Bracklone Street. Denis died on Tuesday May 8 at his home after a long illness. Sympathy is extended to his wife Edith, son Adrian and Adrian’s partner Pamela, daughter Gillian, granddaughter Emily, sisters, Violet (Johnston) and Sylvia (Bradley), his aunt Maud Bagnall, and his extended family and many friends.
Denis worked in Butlers Engineering for 26 years. He had a very strong work ethic and was a hard worker all his life. Denis had been ill for the past 8 years with long stays in the Mater Private and also Portlaoise Hospital. Denis had a great determination to get on with his life, each time he was discharged from hospital.
Dennis was involved with the VEC, also Sandy Lane NS and was a leader of the Boys Brigade for many years. He was also secretary of local Fianna Fail party for many years. He was passionate about politics and attended many Fianna Fail Ard Fheis and Cumann meetings. He also enjoyed following Laois football. Denis was preleased by his parents Bob and May Ward Bracklone St many years ago, also his sisters Daisy Abraham (Tullamore) and Ruby Handcock (Bray). Service took place at St. Paul’s Church with burial after in the adjoining churchyard.

If you want to get out and about to meet others with spare time on their hands, why not come along to the men’s shed meeting this Thursday May 24 at 4pm in the Alert Unit, Botley Lane Business Park. The areas of interest so far are DIY hobby, restoration, computer training. The shed is also open to more suggestions. New members are most welcome.

Congratulations to Oisin Hoey on his recent athletics titles. Oisin won the Leinster masters championships for the 56LB for distance and the shot putt as well as the Irish masters championship for the 56lb for distance event. Seodhna Hoey has in recent days won the Leinster indoor championship for the U/15 shot putt, the Carlow open sports U/15 shot putt competition. She has also won the Laois secondary schools and Laois championship titles in this event as well as placing second in the South Leinster schools championships in both shot putt and discus. On May 7 Seodhna won both shot and discus at St Abbans open sports with personal best performances in each discipline. Continuing with the family’s busy schedule, Sean O’Callaghan Hoey won the Irish open takwando title for full contact sparring and placed 3rd in the Takwando patterns event. At the end of April Sean lifted the title of the southern centre Leinster off the road motor cycle championship. On May 5 Sean was 3rd in all four races and 3rd placer overall in the south centre motor cycle race in Ferns Wexford. On May 6 in the YMSA Moto X in Broadford he placed 2nd. Well done once again to the very talented Hoey family, from all in Portarlington.
COLAISTE IOSAGAIN 5K RUN
Colaiste Iosagain are organising a 5k fun run on Friday May 25 at 11.30am starting at Colaiste Iosagain and finishing at Colaiste Iosagain. The 5k route will circle the town. Entry fee is €2.
Portarlington Active Retirement Association/Happy Hearts Club are holding an exhibition of arts and crafts on Thursday May 24 from 2pm – 4pm in the community centre. Free admission. Please call and admire or buy the beautiful hand crafts and paintings of these creative people.
A meeting of the local residents interested in the upkeep of the Blackhall Bridge amenity area will be held in the Portarlington Community Centre on Wednesday May 30 at 8pm.
The monthly meeting of the GIY will take place in the French Quarter Cafe, French Church Street on Thursday May 31 from 7.30pm to 9pm. We will be discussing best practice for garden planning, with some great tips and advice. We will also work on plans for the plot of land at the allotments site. Some of us may even take a site visit on the night to get a good picture of what we have to play with.

THE WIZARD OF OZ
St Patrick’s Boys NS presents the Wizard of Oz in Portarlington GAA Centre on Thursday and Friday May 24 and 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets €7 available from the school, or on the door on both nights.
We started off this year with model making and had some excellent entries in from the girl’s Presentation PS, with Megan Donagher 2nd u10 and Reagan Lawlor 3rd u12 in Laois. Basketball was coached by Louise Foster with 3 teams entered, one u11 mixed and u16 girls. These two teams did not proceed outside of Laois, but the boys u16 are Laois winners and are through to the next round of the competition. Three teams were entered in the table quiz.
Handwriting entries came again from St Patricks and Presentation girls, some great work but no winners. Next came a day in Stradbally for cross country trials. We have eight athletes representing Portarlington for Laois teams in cross country running in Athlone in May. Our talent entries were Caoimhe Fitzpatrick and Katie O Donnell who won the county final in singing and music and will also go on to Athlone in May for the national finals. Art entries were in abundance again this year from all the schools. We had 3 silver medallists in Laois, Satori Shiels u12 girls, Adam Cooper u10 boys and Lee Dixon u12 boys. We also had a gold medal winner in Laois boys u8 Charlie Wallace. He also goes to Athlone in May for the national finals.
ST CONLETH’S LADIES
As part of the club’s fundraising for the upcoming Féile competition a cake sale will be held this coming Sunday, May 27, in Killenard Community Centre after 10.30 mass. Anyone wishing to donate cakes, rafle prizes etc. can contact Robert Stafford at 087 2509914 or can bring them along on the day.
The club would like to say a big thank you to all those who gave so generously in supporting our table quiz and flag days last weekend and also to those committee members and others who ensured that both events were a big success. Under 10s and under12s training continues in O’Dempseys on Saturday mornings at 10am. New members very welcome.
