“Rome was not built in a day” and it is unfair when comparisons are made with other channels, who have unlimited financial backing and years of technical experience.

Recently, in one week, no fewer than seven occasions were counted when programmes from BBC and UTV were absolutely filthy and degrading. Their content could not be published in an Irish newspaper, taped for radio or screened for Irish cinemas. Yet there is no censorship on this material transmitted into our domains.

Parents and others will have to exercise very great care in this respect in the future. TÉ can, it is felt, do much by transmitting programmes that will attract the viewer and family audience.

The suggestion was made that films, including Westerns, should be dubbed with an Irish language soundtrack. One Gaelic League member said that children’s programmes, particularly, should be wholly in Irish, as television was “for the coming generations.”

Laois’ first TV lady

Mrs Maureen Killeen, Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise, had the honour of being the first person from Laois to be seen on Telefis Eireann. The occasion--receiving her prize in the National Breadbaking Championships.

No phone for Ballyroan
