The Abbeyleix Bog Management Committee are hosting the Local Bioblitz Challenge at Abbeyleix Bog on Saturday, June 8. Bog explorers will set off from the ‘basecamp’ at the Manor Hotel to record as many different species as possible in the allocated time. There will also be small exhibition of Abbeyleix bog and biodiversity/wildlife-themed material. Guided walks will start from the car-park/entrance to the hotel.
Congratulations to the set dancers from Durrow/Abbeyleix Macra who have reached the National Talent final, which will be held in The Helix in Dublin on May 18. The girls won both the county round and the regional round of the competition to get to the National Final. We wish the girls all the best in the competition. The team members are Bríd Walsh, Cathy Downey, Laura Brennan and Catherine Walshe.
May meeting was held on Tuesday May 7, President Pat O Halloran opened the meeting with prayer and My Land. Secretary, Alice Reilly read a minute of March meeting, also correspondence was dealt with. 9 members attended Fe deration dinner which was enjoyed by all. Secretary gave report on Federation meeting in Camross. Catherine Smith, treasurer gave report on finances. Federation summer outing will take place on August 7 with overnight stay in An Grianan, some members will travel. National ICA AGM will be held in the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise on Saturday May 25. The Rosetta Neville cup awarded for highest number of points gained from monthly competitions during the year 2012-2013 was jointly won by Pat o Halloran and Mary Hearns. Abbeyleix ICA will celebrate its Centenary in 2014; plans are to document their involvement in the many organisations down through the years The group are appealing to members past and present to support the proposed book publication. Anyone with a story and or old photographs send them to Pat O Halloran, Alice Reilly, Mary Hearns or any member of Abbeyleix ICA. Supper was served by Sadie Chester. Next meeting is on June 4 at 8pm. The fundraising sale on May 2 and May 3 in Abbeyleix was a tremendous success. Laois Riding for The Disabled, Abbeyleix Acorns and Abbeyleix Women’s Development Group extend our grateful thanks to, Deidre and William Moynan who provided the premises, to the many volunteers who gave generously of their time to man the shop over the two day, to all who donated goods for sale and delicious home baking.
