LAOIS Comhairle na nÓg recently began to pass on the fruits of last year’s labour when members travelled to a number of Secondary Schools in Laois to distribute their ‘Skills for Leaving Home’ packs.
Almost 270 Leaving Certificate students in Mountrath Community School, Mountmellick Community School and Portlaoise College gratefully received the packs containing two booklets, ‘Flying the Coop’ developed by Roscommon Youth Services and ‘Skills for Leaving Home’ developed and designed by Laois Comhairle na nÓg.
This pack is aimed at senior students leaving school and leaving home for the first time. It focuses on all the information needed to live on one’s own, from first aid, to tips and advice on the transition from second level to college and advises on issues regarding, accommodation, health and education services, safety, even basic needs like cooking and washing.
Lysagh Redmond, chairperson of Laois Comhairle, advised students that this pack would be a useful source of information and a tool for young people to have with them when they live away from home for the first time in their lives.
The student council in each secondary school thanked the Comhairle for compiling this pack and agreed to distribute it to each Leaving Certificate student in their school. Laois Comhairle is currently busy meeting with student bodies all over the county, and will continue this work into the new school year 2013/2014. Through these meetings, Laois Comhairle gains feedback from young people on issues they feel need to be raised and in turn raises issues with adult decision making bodies in the county.
