St Joseph’s Accordian Band are doing an Ass and Cart Pull from Portlaoise to Mountmellick this Saturday, to arrive at SuperValu at 11.30am, where the band will perform tunes while fundraising to buy new uniforms for junior members, please support.


The blood donor clinic will be held in St Patrick’s BNS on Thursday May 23 from 5pm to 8.30pm.


Mountmellick Utd FC are holding an important fundraising race night on Friday May 31 in Moloney’s Gaelic Bar. Horses €20 each, now for sale from any committee member or from Moloney’s.

Rosary will be recited in Castlebrack cemetery each Sunday at 7pm during May. The Rosary will also be recited in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in St Joseph’s Church each Sunday evening in May at 7pm. All welcome to both.


A disco will be held on Friday May 17 in the Owenass hall for 9 to 12 year olds from 8pm to 10 pm, admission €5, includes a drink and packet of crisps. All welcome, strict supervision.

A sale is being held on Saturday May 18 from 10.30am to 1pm in the Old School (near the Church of Ireland). Stalls including baking, plants, clothes, children’s, teas and a raffle with cash prizes. Everyone welcome.


An art exhibition by 5th class pupils from St Joseph’s GNS will be launched on Tuesday May 14 at 11.30am. Titled ‘Little Women’, it comprises figurines based on characters from the novel ‘Little Women’. It will be on view until Friday May 31. See for more.


The knitting club meets on Tuesday mornings in the library from 10.30am to noon. Come along for a chat and a cuppa. New members are welcome.

Comhrá Gaeilge is a competition during the Fleadh for under 9,11,13,15 and 18s. It is a conversation in Irish and can be most useful as a preparation over the years for the oral exam in the Junior/Leaving Certs. We encourage the children to take part. Free help at the classes on Tuesday nights at 7.55pm. All welcome.

The Laois Fleadh will take place in Stradbally on the weekend of June 1 & 2. Entry to the competition is €2 per competitor. Further information from your local branch or 085 713 8940. Open to members of CCÉ and non-members.


Excitement is building up as Mountmellick music groups prepare for the upcoming Fleadh Laoise in Stradbally on the weekend of May 31 to June 2. There will be extra practices on May 19 & 26 for each of the age groups. There will be free music and dance in the Market Square in Stradbally so do come along everybody and enjoy.


Plans for upcoming Wednesdays as follows. May 15 at 10.30am: group meeting in MDA. May 22 at 10.30am: walking group. May 29: no group meeting in the MDA, instead all members are asked to come to the Macra Hall at 1pm to welcome our guests and help serve refreshments during the Bealtaine dance from 2pm to 5pm.

Weekly activities for members: Mondays: Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon free transport from MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: dancing on May 22 in the Macra hall at 3pm and on May 29 there will be the Bealtaine dance in the Macra hall from 2pm to 5pm. Thursdays: music & song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm and art classes in MDA from 2pm to 4pm. New members welcome to join at any time.


Final payments for Lourdes pilgrimage are required by the end of May. Deposits are required for Rome/Assisi please.

family FUN DAY

The family fun day organised by the Scouts is on Sunday June 9 from 2 pm to 6pm in the Carnival field, all welcome.

A 5.5K in aid of the RISE Foundation is on Friday May 17 starting at Centrepoint car park at 6.30pm. Participants are asked to donate €5 to the RISE Foundation. A monster raffle will be held at the end of the walk. ‘Contact Brenda on 085 8551107.


The annual mass for members and deceased members is on Wednesday May 29 at 8pm.


The area final for the track and field events for Mountmellick area are taking place in Smiths field on Friday May 31 with registration at 5.30pm. It is €2 to enter a competition. Further details from 085 713 8940. The county finals will be in St Abban’s on Saturday June 22.
