The Brittas Mass composed by Portarlington native Tom Conroy from Patrick St, who now lives in Clonaslee was televised last Sunday July 21 live on RTE 1. A number of instrumentalists from Portarlington Folk Choir joined in this celebration.
This year is the bi-centenary anniversary year of St Manman’s church in Clonaslee, which was built in 1813. To celebrate, there have been events going on throughout the year, including a concert on May 24 last in which Tom was heavily involved. The RTÉ Mass was broadcast live from the Church and everyone came along to join in the celebration.
The local Clonaslee Church Choir performed the music on the day under the direction of Tom, along with special guest soloists and instrumentalists from Tipperary, Portlaoise, Portarlington, Killenard, and Kilkenny.
Brittas is the name of the area in Clonaslee which is well known for its beautiful walks in Brittas Woods, the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of Brittas Lake, and the historical Brittas Castle.
In addition to composing religious music, Tom has recorded and released four albums featuring all of his own original compositions and has received national Radio airplay on RTÉ Radio, and numerous radio stations around Ireland.
