The Power of Words Health Reading at your library takes place as part of Laois Connects week on Tuesday October 3 in Mountmellick library from 11am - 12 noon. Laois Connects - Dr Eddie Murphy talk
‘Developing your real self - top transformation tip’, a motivational talk by Dr Eddie Murphy, clinical psychologist with RTE and Leinster Express, takes place as part of Laois Connects at the Mountmellick Community Arts Centre on Thursday, October 3, 8pm - 9.30pm. Wednesday October 2: the group are hosting the ‘Ageing Well’ workshop (see details on this page). Therefore on October 2 there is no group meeting in the MDA, instead, all members are asked to come to the Macra Hall before 10am to welcome the many visitors and to help to serve tea and biscuits.
Wednesday October 9: walking group at MDA at 10.30am. Wednesday October 16: group meeting in MDA. The outing in October is to ‘The Over 50s Show’ in the RDS on Friday 18 October. If you want a place on the special bus please tell a committee member soon. ‘The Ageing with Confidence’ course in the MDA will begin on Monday October 21 at 10.30am. If you want to attend this course please give your name to a committee member soon. The usual weekly activities for members continue. Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm. New members are always welcome.
Set dancing continues each Monday night at 8.30pm in Ballyfin community except bank holidays. Classes will be given. Contact Maureen on 087 6482038 for details.
The Know Your Ag table quiz is coming up this Friday October 4 contact the number below if interested. There will be a bowling and a club night out in Portlaoise on Saturday October 5. Panto time is approaching soon, registration for children interested in taking part in the Macra Panto will be held shortly, €10 once off fee required. Badminton is continuing in the Macra Hall each Monday and Wednesday, if you are interested in joining Badminton contact Trevor on 087 9143226. Rehearsals for Capers, a short variety show competition which involves singing, dancing, comedy and musicians will be taking place soon. St Vincent’s Hospital Support Group is holding its AGM on Wednesday October 2 at 8.30pm in the Town Hall.
The knitting circle meets every Tuesday in the library from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your needles and wool and join the group for a cuppa and a chat.
ADULT BOOK CLUB
The adult book club will meet to discuss ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak on Tuesday October 1 at 11am.
Medals for the summer reading challenge (Creepy House) will be awarded on Thursday October 3 at 4.15pm in the library.
The launch of an art exhibition titled ‘Laois Scapes’ by artist Robert Stack will take place on Friday October 4 from 6pm to 7.30pm. His paintings will consist of watercolour and acrylic works.
Free art workshops for adults (12pm to 2pm) and children (10.30am to 11.30am) will be held on Saturday October 12. Please note that booking is essential. Contact the library at 057 8644572 for more details.
The library will host a Europe Direct Soapbox regional final competition on Thursday October 17 at 7.30pm. Calling all debaters out there to argue for or against the topic ‘Citizens are at the heart of the EU’ and be in with a chance to win an ipad and a trip to Brussels. Regional finalists will then compete in the All Ireland final in Dublin Castle for a first prize of €1000. There are 2 categories, under 18 and over 18. Full details of the competition and application forms are available to download from www.europedirect.ie.
There was a very good turnout at the recent registration night. Classes now return at the sports centre on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 8pm. Both adults and children are welcome to the classes and each class is based on ability. Come and find out which class suits your requirements. The next branch session is in the ICA Hall on Sunday October 6 from 4.30pm to 6pm with all welcome. At the meeting following registration it was agreed that the celebration night would be deferred to November as we have insufficient time to organise a night befitting our 25th anniversary, that Mountmellick CCÉ will play for the Drama Club in the Druid on Friday November 15 and for the Christmas fair on Sunday December 8 and a mass class will be set up for musicians going to play music at mass. We have been asked to play at mass one Sunday every two months.
Training for the above club takes place at the Sports Centre each Friday from 8pm to 9.30pm. Come and join in. For further information contact 085 713 8940.
Coaching of Gaelic football for girls and boys continues for u8, u10, u12 and u14 on Tuesdays and Thursdays now at the earlier time of 6.30pm. New players welcome.

Late Michael O’Neill
The community extend their deepest sympathies to the family of the late Michael (Krangie) O’ Neill, formerly of Portarlington and Mountmellick who sadly passed away on September 17 in Zaragoza, Spain whilst doing what he loved - fishing. Funeral and mass arrangements are not yet confirmed for the UK and Ireland. Sadly missed by his loving wife Ann and his children Lenore, Stephanie, Joseph, Susan, Therese and Daniel, by his sisters Carmel, Stella and Annette, his brother John Joe and his 14 grandchildren, extended family and friends.
