Laois Fleadh Ceoil, organised under the auspices of Spink CCÉ will be held at Abbeyleix from May 30 to June 1. This will be a festive occasion in the town. Thanks to the Management and staff of St Mary’s Primary school all competitions will take place at the Ballyroan road venue. Over the month of May in Abbeyleix Day Care Centre in the afternoons, Bealtaine will be celebrated. Organised by the Arts Office, artist Anne Holland will give a series of weekly creative art workshops for patients and out-patients. Anne Holland is a visual artist with ten years experience working in the community. The programme will include ceramics, mosaic, photography and mono printing. Invitation only, contact: 057 8664033.
On Tuesday May 20, in Gort na nOir, Abbeyleix from 1.30pm - 2.30pm, the Abbeyleix Active Retirement Group will hold a Lets Dance Event with dance tutor Maureen Culleton. Performing a selection of sequence dances from the Irish and Scottish dance traditions. Invitation only.
On Thursday May 22 in Abbeyleix Library from 6pm - 7.15pm, people can clebrate the Bealtaine Festival in the Library with a show entitled ‘The Good Old Days’. All are Welcome to this event.
Between April 2 and 25 Caroline Conway will exhibit in the library art gallery. Also between April 4 and 22 Orla McDonagh and Heywood Students will exhibit in the gallery also. From April 29 - May 30 Spink Ceolamhtas will hold an exhibition of photos, trophys etc as part of their hosting the Laois Fleadh Cheoil. Juvenile Chess Club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. Our Knitting Club takes place each Wednesday, 10.30 and 12.30pm.
ALZHEIMER TEA DAY
The Horseshoe are holding a Tea Day in aid of the Alzheimer Society. Taking place on Friday May 2 at 10.30am. All are welcome to attend and support this very worthy cause.
THE LATE SEAMUS DOUGHAN
The late Seamus Doughan, Cappanaclough, Abbeyleix, passed away peacefully at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday April 3 2014. Deeply regretted by his brother Terence, his brother in law Paddy Murphy , his loving wife Nora, his sons Terence and Patrick, Margaret , donal and family relations neighbours and friends. Removal on Saturday April 5 from his residence for requiem mass at 2.30pm in st Fintans Church, raheen, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.
Abbeyleix Bog Project Ltd will hold its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 12 May 2014 at 7.30 pm in the Abbeyleix Heritage House. All welcome.
Abbeyleix Bridge Club
Mr Shay Malone’s President’s Prize completed our Bridge Year. The competition was played over two weeks (25th March and 1st April) with a ten table Mitchell and Howell Movement.
The presentation of prizes took place at the President’s Dinner in the Manor Hotel on Saturday 5th April. The winners of the President’s Prize were Maura Burke and Catherine Campion. 2nd Colin Murphy Ann Doherty, Gross:Paddy Prendergast Tom Reilly, 3rd Kathleen Lee Barbara O’Donnell, 4th Mary Lalor Nuala Molumby, 5th Kathleen Broderick Ann Egan, 6th Frances Stanley Maura Horan, 7th Dinah Campion Maura Fennin, 8th Michael Delaney Sean Bolger, 1st Session Larry and Ita Ryder, 2nd Session Shay and Brigid Malone. Paddy Purcell won the Player of theYear. The Club AGM was held on Tuesday 8th April Ita Ryder was elected as Club President for 2014/15.
