James fintan lalor
This year’s James Fintan Lalor School takes place on October 17/18 at the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise. Just some of the speakers confirmed so far include John Lonergan, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, Sean O’Rourke of RTÉ.
Portlaoise Youth Cafe is opened as normal over the summer months. If your child is between the ages of 10-18 years, why not drop them down to the Youth Cafe, only €1 entry fee on Fridays for 13-18 year olds 2-6pm. On Saturdays 3-5pm for 10-18 year olds. They can meet new friends, play pool, computer games, air hockey and attend fun activities like music events. Light refreshments served. The volunteers are fully trained in child protection and all are garda vetted.
Anyone for Tennis
Laois County Council will hold parks tennis in Portlaoise from July 28- August 1. Lessons from Monday to Friday: 10am-11.30am (5-9 years); 12pm-2pm 10-14 years. Racquets and balls provided. Portlaoise Gymnastics Club summer camps are for boys and girls, members and non members run for four weeks in July. Monday to Wednesday starting on the July 7. Times are 10am -12.30pm. Email any names for the camp to email@example.com. Include the following: child’s name, date of birth, address, the week you wish to attend and a contact phone number. Children must be born in 2009 or older to participate.
ARA Portlaoise autumn holiday to Quality Hotel, Clonakilty, Co Cork. Dates from Monday, September 29 to Friday, October 3. Bus leaves parish centre on Monday at 10 am. All inclusive price is €275 per person. Single supplement €10 extra per night. Trudy will be available each Friday from 10.30-11.00 am at the parish centre to take names and deposits.
Summer outings: Wednesday July 16 bus to visit Gardens in Freshford Kilkenny leaving Portlaoise Parish Centre; Wednesday July 23 Visit to Limerick ‘City of Culture’ travelling by train. Included in visit will be a hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city. Full details of these events to follow at a later date.
Due to summer holiday break there will be no indoor bowling at St Mary’s Hall until the beginning of September.
Laois Friends of Midlands Simon has a collection day in Portlaoise on Saturday, July 12 from 10am-8pm. We need volunteers to help out for 1-2 hour slots in Portlaoise from 10am-6pm. Portlaoise Shotokan Karate Academy is delighted to announce that we have now added a further class to our schedule. We will now train Saturday mornings from 11.30am to 1pm and every Monday and Thursday at the times below. All welcome. Juniors 7pm – 8pm; seniors 8pm – 9pm. The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive Service needs volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from chemoptherapy in Dublin. Volunteers needed to pick up patients at their homes, drive them to hospital and pick them up later to bring them home. Free to patients and driver expenses covered. There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish Lotto jackpot when numbers were drawn on June 26. No 16,22,23,28. The nine match 3s won €112 each. Next week’s jackpot is €14,000.
Portlaoise GAA Club have launched the first drive-in bingo sessions in Laois. Buses and cars are invited to park up at the grounds in Rathleague and play from the comfort of their vehicle, announcing they have won by beeping their horn and flashing lights.
The fun family bingo is on the last Sunday of July, August and September, starting on July 27 at 3pm.
Overall payout on each day will be €7,500 which includes an accumulative jackpot starting at €1,000.

Summer Arts Workshops
Laois County Council Summer Arts workshops are filling up fast but there are a few places still available for Art workshops with artist Conor Brennan running in St Francis School, Portlaoise from Tuesday July 22 to Thursday July 24 for children aged 7 to 12 from 2pm to 4pm. Over the three days the two hour workshops will include painting, drawing and clay sculpture.
Also in Portlaoise in St Francis School from Tuesday July 22 to Thursday July 24 from 11am to 1pm, budding young writers aged 12 to 15 will get the opportunity to explore creative writing with writer Ann O’Brien.
Ann will give tips and will guide participants into writing their own stories and poems in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere.

Trad music workshops
Traditional Irish music students from around the county are eagerly looking forward to a week long workshop at Heritage House, Abbeyleix which begins on Monday July 14.
The five day event is a follow on from the widely acclaimed ‘Careers in Music’ summer school held under the auspices of CCÉ Portlaoise in 2012.
On this occasion the tutors, Áine McGeeney, Yvonne Bolton and Colm Phelan will concentrate on orchestration for ensembles.
All instruments including singing will be catered for at intermediate and advanced level.
All traditional music students are welcome to come along for the workshops.
Registration on Monday July 14 at 10am; classes will run from 11 to 4 each day.
