THE sun shone for the Festival on the Mountain in Rosenallis last Sunday, with large crowds turning out for a great family day.

Sponsored by Cuddy Kitchen and Carpentry, the day was kicked off by the fancy dress competition with compare Paddy Keating aka ‘Rock on Paddy’. The winning boys entry was Oisin Patrick Doherty as a pirate, and Lucy Conroy as a witch for the girls prize. The next competition was the bonny baby U/1, won by Pippa Conroy, the U/2 category won by Maggie Dooley, and U/3 won by Lorcan White. The glamourous granny competion was great fun and won by Christina Conroy, Mountmellick.

Gemma Goulding presented the Monica Hyland Plaque to Kathleen Lynch Nelson, winner of the mothers’ race. The very popular dog show was held with five catergories, before the much awaited Queen of the Mountain winner was announced.

The 2010 Queen of the Mountain, Irene Delaney from Cadamstown returned to pass on the tiara and sash to new queen Marian Campbell from Portlaoise. Chairperson Sheila Mahon presented the outgoing queen with a trophy to remember her time, and thanked her for her representation of the festival throughout the year.

The art competition winners were presented with their prizes and certificates by Sheila Mahon and all pictures were displayed on the day. In the tug of war, Mhuirt Kelly’s team came out triumphant.

Secretary Ann Young concluded by presenting the judges, Sheila Yates and Margaret Fitzpatrick with flowers. The judges said it’s a difficult job as they would love to pick everyone as a winner and they thanked all the entrants of each competition.

Outgoing chairperson, Sheila Mahon thanked all of the committee members and volunteers who worked so hard organising the event and wished them all the best for the future.
