Deepest Sympathy to Tony Bambrick, Portlaoise Road on the death of his brother Joseph Bambrick, Ballykilcavan, Stradbally, who passed away on Thursday October 25. Joseph will be sadly missed by his wife Mollie, son, daughters, brothers, grandchildren and extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place on Saturday October 27 at the Sacred Heart Church Stradbally, with interment after in Oakdale Cemetery Stradbally. May Joseph rest in peace.

Condolences

Deepest sympathy to Jim Fahy and his family, Arlington Estate Portarlington on the death of his brother John Fahy, Beladd Portlaoise on October 15. John was predeceased by his wife Delores. He will be sadly missed by his son, daughters, brothers, sisters and his extended family and many friends. Requiem mass took place in SS Peter and Paul’s Church Portlaoise with burial after in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. May John rest in peace.

Tennis Club

Portarlington Junior Tennis Club will hold the 2012 championships awards presentation on Saturday November 3 at 7pm in the club house. All award winners, families and friends are invited to attend. We sincerely thank our sponsors for their support.

Coffee for Meals on Wheels

The Anvil will donate €1 for every coffee sold from Monday November 5 through until November 10 for Portarlington Meals on Wheels. This is a very worthy cause, and all donations are always welcome.

Well done Nicole

A big well done once again to Nicole Turner, Garryhinch who once again brought home awards for her brilliant swimming. Nicole took part in the Northern Ireland Disability Swimming Championships in Lisburn. Nicole won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Nicoles times were 50m breaststroke, 1.03. 50m backstroke 1.01. 50m freestyle 45.56. 25m butterfly-25.3.

PTAA Dinner Dance

The Mid Leinster PTAA annual dinner dance takes place on Friday November 16 in the Gandon Inn Emo. Dinner served at 9pm sharp. Numerous spot prizes. Music by Solitare. Subscription €25. Tickets available from Lil Ryan, phone 057 8623919.

Wheelchair Association

The Irish Wheelchair Association wish to thank everyone who contributed so generously to their recent church gate collection.

Blessing of the Graves

Rosary and blessing of the graves will take place on Sunday November 4, after 10.30am mass in Killenard and at 3pm in St Michael’s Cemetery Portarlington.

Future of Athletic Club

The PCDA (Portarlington Community Development Association) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday October 30 at 8pm in the community centre to discuss the future of this beautiful building on the Main Street. The building got a face lift earlier this year thanks to the Dirty old Towns, but there are serious decisions to be made, and renovations to be completed before it can be brought back into a state of use. If you have a group or club who could avail of this facility, we would love you to attend, as the meeting will be of interest to you. All are welcome.

Social Services

The Social Services/Meals on Wheels committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to their flag day last weekend. Grateful thanks to businesses who allowed their premises to be used for collecting. Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped collect for such a worthy cause.

PORT CENTRAL

We are a small voluntary group trying to strengthen community spirit by providing a social space where people can meet and greet. We started the programme last Sunday October 28 in the community centre with a kids disco for 6 - 12yr olds. We hope to continue with this event on other occasions.
Our programme will continue in November with 2 Rambling House evenings on Thursday November 1 and Thursday 15 at 8pm in the French Cafe, French Church Street. A Rambling House is a chance for everyone to bring along their instruments and play a few tunes or just come for the sing-song and the chat. Free admission. Hope to see you there on the night. Slimming World

Slimming World Portarlington continues on Monday evenings. 1st class at 3.30pm, 2nd at 5.30pm and 3rd class at 7.30pm in Portarlington RFC, Lea Road. For more details call Laura on 085 7514015.

Rainbow Programme

The Rainbow Programme for primary school children of the parish, aged 7-12 years will commence in the Presentation Primary School Station Road on Tuesday November 6 from 2.30pm - 3.30pm. The programme consists of twelve sessions, one session weekly with celebrate me days. Rainbow is a support programme for children who have experienced a death, a separation, or are struggling through a painful experience. If you are interested in acquiring more information, having your child or children take part in the programme, contact Muriel or Rose on 057 8623007 (Monday - Friday 10am to 2.30pm/school hours).

Craft Fair

Craft fair takes place at Mount St Anne’s Killenard on Sunday November 11 from 11am to 4pm. A wide selection of homemade crafts, including crochet, knitting, Christmas cakes, chutneys, jewellery, cards, candles and stock clearance of our bookshop etc. There will also be a raffle on the day. Tea/coffee served. You can book a stall to sell your produce or just come along on the day to do some bargain shopping.
